Abigail rounded the corner back into the snack aisle, pushing her cart steadily, scanning until she spotted Emma near the endcap display.
Emma was just placing the last item into the cart—a family-sized bag of something sweet she absolutely did not need but fully intended to eat anyway. She turned at the sound of wheels approaching.
The second she saw Abigail's face, her expression shifted.
"What's wrong?" Emma asked softly.
Abigail exhaled through her nose and rolled her eyes slightly. "Professor Shields is here again."
Emma's smile faltered immediately. Not dramatic. Not explosive. Just protective.
"She spoke to you?" Emma asked, voice tightening just a little.
"Yeah," Abigail said calmly. "Tried to make small talk."
Emma straightened. "Do I need to say something?"
There was no hesitation in her tone.
Abigail shook her head, stepping closer and resting her hand gently on Emma's belly. "No, baby. I handled it."
Emma searched her face for a second, making sure. "You're sure?"
"Very sure," Abigail nodded. "I made it clear. Strictly professional. No outside conversations."
Emma's jaw set briefly, then she nodded. "Okay."
She took a breath, letting it go. "Then let's get out of here."
Abigail smiled faintly. "That's the plan."
Emma reached for Abigail's hand as they pushed both carts toward the front of the store. The checkout lines were short, the hum of scanners and bagging filling the air.
Emma stayed close the entire time, fingers hooked into the back pocket of Abigail's jeans like she was staking a claim without saying a word.
Abigail paid, loaded the bags into the carts, and they walked back to the car together. She loaded everything into the trunk while Emma leaned against the side of the vehicle, arms folded loosely over her stomach.
Abigail walked around the front of the car and opened the passenger door for Emma, offering her a small, steady smile.
"Your chariot," she said lightly.
Emma rolled her eyes but smiled anyway, stepping in carefully. "Thank you."
Abigail made sure she was settled, one hand briefly brushing her shoulder before closing the door gently. As she moved around to the driver's side, Emma's eyes shifted toward the store entrance.
Professor Shields was walking out.
Emma's expression changed—subtle but immediate.
Emma and Shields made eye contact for a split second.
Something sharp flickered across Emma's face.
Abigail rounded the car and slipped into the driver's seat, unaware. She adjusted the mirror, reached for the ignition—
And Emma leaned over and kissed her.
Hard.
Not playful. Not quick.
Claiming.
Abigail let out a soft sound of surprise before instinct kicked in, her hand rising to Emma's jaw as she kissed her back just as firmly.
Emma's fingers curled into the front of Abigail's hoodie, pulling her closer. The kiss deepened, slower now but no less intense.
Abigail broke for half a second. "Em—"
