Adhiraj’s POV
At night..By the time I reached home, it was past midnight. The mansion was quiet, the only sound coming from the faint rustling of the night breeze against the windows.
I loosened my tie, exhaling as I stepped inside. I expected the house to be asleep, but the soft glow of a lamp from the living room caught my attention.
And there she was.
my babygirl.
Sitting on the couch, arms crossed, eyes dark and unreadable.
I paused, knowing immediately that she had been waiting for me.
Shit.
I took a step closer, but before I could say anything, she spoke.
“You’re late,” she said, voice calm—too calm.
I ran a hand through my hair. “Got caught up with work.”
She let out a small, humorless laugh. “Of course, you did.”
I sighed, “Priya—”
“No,” she interrupted, tilting her head. “Let me guess. You were so busy that you forgot to call, and now you’re here to say something that I won’t like.”
I exhaled slowly. “I can’t be here for Holi.”
Silence.
Her expression didn’t change, but I saw the flicker in her eyes—the disappointment she was trying to mask.
“You can’t?” she repeated, voice dangerously soft.
I nodded, watching her closely.
She hummed, then stood up, brushing imaginary dust off her pajama pants. “Alright.”
That was too easy.
I narrowed my eyes. “Priya—”
“Goodnight, Adhiraj,” she cut me off, already walking toward the stairs.
I knew better than to let her go just like that. I grabbed her wrist, gently but firmly, making her stop. “Don’t do that.”
She turned to face me, eyes blazing now. “Do what?”
“Act like it doesn’t bother you.”
She yanked her hand away. “Why? Does it make you feel guilty?”
I clenched my jaw. “I don’t want to fight with you.”
“Then don’t.” She stepped back. “Go to sleep, Adhiraj. You must be exhausted from your busy day.”
She left before I could say anything else.
I sat there, staring at the empty staircase, knowing this wasn’t over. Not even close.
The exhaustion was finally catching up to me. I had planned to talk to Priya, to explain why I couldn’t be here for Holi, but the moment I sat down on the couch, my body gave in.
I barely remembered closing my eyes before sleep took over.
The next morning, my body ache.
I blinked, before my gaze flickered to the clock. 5 AM.
