I woke up the next morning, still clutching Alex, the events of last night running through my mind. I nudged Alex, trying to get him to wake up. "Alex," I whispered. "Wake up. We have to check out soon."
"Can't we just lay here forever?" Alex asked, his arms still around my waist.
"I wish," I sighed, ruffling his hair. "But I have to go. And unfortunately face Brian."
I had mumbled the last part, not really intending for him to hear me; but he did anyway. "Oh man you're right, we gotta go talk to him." Alex was suddenly very eager as he jumped out of bed and began gathering our clothes from around the hotel room.
Despite how excited Alex seemed, talking to Brian was the last thing I wanted to do. I could already envision all of the yelling and fighting that was going to ensue; and no matter what type of scenario I imagined, they all ended with Alex and I having to break up. I hadn't realized I had been thinking about all of this while standing in the corner, tears welling up in my eyes, until Alex asked me why I was crying. "I- just- I don't want this to be our last day together," I said, chocking back tears.
Alex pulled me towards him, wrapping me in a tight hug. "Blaire, I am not going to let this be our last day together. I will work everything out, please just trust me," he gave me another squeeze and kissed my forehead.
"I hope you're right," I sighed, taking my clothes from Alex and putting them back on; trying to smooth out the wrinkles that had formed from them spending the night in a heap on the floor.
I watched as Alex put on his clothes, his back to me. I could still see lines from my fingernails and there was a faint hickey on his neck. Alex turned around and I realized that I left a few more love bites than I had realized, my eyes following the trail from his neck to his shoulders. When Alex caught me looking at his neck he laughed, "Does it look like you had a good time last night?"
I shook my head, chuckling, "I have makeup in the car."
"Well you better use some of it yourself too," Alex said. "I don't have to look at you to know I marked you last night." I turned my head towards the mirror, lifting my hair to get a better view of my neck. Gasping, my eyes fell on a large bruise on my neck, surrounded by smaller, lighter marks. "Oh shit," Alex's jaw dropped. "Shit Blaire I am so sorry. I had no idea it would be this bad. I just got caught in the moment, I'm so sorry. Oh Shit."
I shook my head, laughing. "I guess we'll both need a bit of makeup then," I braided my hair to the side, covering the worst of it. I knew I had told Alex I didn't care, and I really didn't want to care; but I knew it would be easier to face Brian without a huge love bite to distract him from what I was saying.
After getting dressed, Alex and I gathered the rest of our things and checked out of the hotel. In the parking lot, Alex sat on the curb while I dabbed concealer on his neck. Then, using my rearview mirror, I applied the makeup to myself. "Again, I'm really sorry," Alex said; but neither of us could help from laughing at the situation.
"Oh trust me, this is the least of my worries." I finished my job and threw the makeup back into my purse. I turned to Alex, looking at how calmly he was slouched in the passenger seat of my car, the door still wide open. "How are we gonna do this?" I sighed.
Alex took my hand, giving it a squeeze. "We're going to go to your house and talk to Brian as calmly as we can and I will make sure that everything works out."
"But what if it doesn't?" I asked.
"It will," Alex smoothed my hair. "I will make sure of it. Let's just go in there and try to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible. Just be calm, ok?" He leaned over and kissed my forehead before leaving my car and getting in his own.
