Chapter One : The new guy

Yang Jeongin liked routines. They made life easier—predictable. Mornings always started with coffee, emails, and the soft hum of the office settling into its rhythm. He liked it that way. It allowed him to focus, to be efficient.

That morning, however, his routine was interrupted.

"Jeongin, can I see you for a moment?"

Jeongin looked up from his screen to see his manager, Mr. Park, gesturing for him. He quickly finished typing an email before standing up and walking over.

"You’ve probably heard we have a new employee joining us today," Mr. Park said, adjusting his tie. "Hwang Hyunjin. I need you to help him adjust—show him the ropes, make sure he doesn’t get lost."

Jeongin nodded. "Understood."

"He should be arriving any minute now. Just be patient with him, alright?"

Jeongin didn’t think much of the request. He had trained new employees before. Most of them asked a few questions, took notes, and then left him alone. Easy.

But then, the office door swung open, and Hyunjin arrived.

He was tall, sharp-featured, and dressed in a crisp white shirt, sleeves slightly rolled up. His blond hair was slightly tousled, and his expression held the confidence of someone who had never doubted himself a day in his life.

"Ah, you must be Hyunjin," Mr. Park greeted him warmly. "Welcome to the team. This is Jeongin—he’ll be helping you adjust."

Hyunjin turned to Jeongin with an easy, charming smile. "Nice to meet you! Hope we can get along well."

Jeongin nodded politely. "Likewise."

Hyunjin waited a moment, expecting more, but Jeongin had already turned back toward his desk.

Mr. Park clapped Hyunjin on the shoulder. "He’s one of our best employees. You’ll learn a lot from him."

"Looking forward to it," Hyunjin said, though there was already something unreadable in his expression.

**─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───**

As the morning progressed, Hyunjin tried his best to settle in. He had been given a desk near Jeongin’s, which should have made things easy. The problem was, Jeongin was impossible to talk to.

"So, how long have you been working here?" Hyunjin asked, casually spinning his pen between his fingers.

"Three years," Jeongin replied without looking up from his phone.

"What do you like most about the job?"

Silence. Then, a distracted answer. "It's stable."

Hyunjin raised an eyebrow. "That’s it?"

Jeongin hummed in response, eyes still fixed on his phone screen.

It wasn’t like Hyunjin was trying to be annoying—he just didn’t like awkward silences. Unfortunately, Jeongin seemed to thrive in them.

Hyunjin leaned forward slightly. "What are you so busy with anyway?"

Jeongin’s fingers hesitated over the keyboard for a second before he responded to his message. He had been in the middle of texting Bang Chan, his longtime crush, about weekend plans. Not that he’d ever say that out loud.

"Work," Jeongin lied smoothly.

Hyunjin scoffed under his breath. "Right. Work."

Jeongin ignored him.

Annoyed, Hyunjin leaned back in his chair and folded his arms. "You know, I get that you’re busy, but you could at least pretend to be friendly."

That finally got Jeongin to look up. He blinked at Hyunjin, as if processing his words. "I am being friendly."

Hyunjin let out a short laugh. "No, you’re being cold."

Jeongin tilted his head slightly. "I don’t mean to be."

"Then what’s your deal?" Hyunjin asked, resting his chin in his palm.

Jeongin hesitated. He wasn’t used to people pushing for conversation, especially not on the first day. Most people got the hint.

But Hyunjin wasn’t most people.

Jeongin sighed, putting his phone down. "I just… don’t talk much."

Hyunjin studied him for a moment before shaking his head with a smirk. "Yeah, no kidding."

And just like that, Hyunjin had already made up his mind: jeongin was rude.

Jeongin, on the other hand, was beginning to wonder if he had just met the most persistent person in the world.
