Our Locks and Codes class on Thursday doesn't go too well. We're learning how to unlock combo locks without knowing the combo. Maddie and I try our best, but at the end of the class, both of us are frustrated, and our fingers are sore and red. No matter how much Katrina tells us that we'll be masters at this soon, Maddie and I are still unhappy and tired.

"This is so frustrating! Combo locks are hard!" whines Maddie as we walk to the foyer.

"I know, right?" I say in response.

"I hope tomorrow night goes well," Maddie says nervously. Tomorrow night? Oh right, tomorrow's Halloween. Maddie and I both have neighbourhood patrol.

"Yeah, I don't want anyone to recognize me tomorrow," I add. "That's one of my worst fears."

"Yeah, cause then we have to do long explanations that don't make sense, if anyone asks," agrees Maddie. "I don't like doing those."

"Me neither!" I say, and we high five.

Mom picks me up from the agency headquarters, and she drills me on tomorrow night's plan while we drive home.

"When you get home, you're only going to have around one to two hours to do your homework. At 6:00, you and Dad are going to McDonald's to grab a bite for dinner, then you're going to drive to the police station," starts Mom.

"YEAH, WE GET JUNK FOOD FOR DINNER!" I cheer excitedly.

"Just this once," sighs Mom. "This is an exception. Moving on...so you two will drive to the police station, you two will quickly change into your uniforms in the washrooms. Chief Robinson will be waiting for you at the main entrance, and he'll lead you to the police cruiser you're using."

"Nice," I say.

"You guys will head back to our neighbourhood and then drive around and look for anything suspicious," finishes Mom. "If you see someone from your school, or anyone you think will recognize you, you'll need to hide yourself. For example, you can cover your face with a book."

"Got it," I say. "Hopefully I won't see anyone from my school. Hold on, what if Natasha comes to our house to trick or treat? She said she might do that."

"I'll just tell Natasha that you're meeting up with your cousins," Mom says confidently. "After that, you'll head back to the police station, change back into your regular clothes, and return the police cruiser. Then, you head home, and then you're done!"

"Now that's easy!" I say eagerly.

"It sounds easy, but the hardest part is making sure that nobody recognizes you," corrects Mom. "That's the reason why you have to change clothes at the police station."

The first thing I see when I get home and walk into my room is a red drawstring bag sitting on my bed. I open the bag, and find a pair of black skinny jeans, a black button down shirt, and a black pair of casual boots. And a note from Mom, which says:

Stef:

Try the skinny jeans on so you know whether they fit or not. If they don't, I have a few extra pairs of black jeans. Let me know if they don't fit.

You're going to change into the clothes in the drawstring bag when you get to the police station.

Mom

I close the bedroom door, and the door leading to the bathroom Ryan and I share, and try on the skinny jeans, which fit perfectly. I change back into my yoga pants and stick the pair of skinny jeans back into the drawstring bag.
