Chapter 15: Spies Do The Test (Again)

"That was close," I pant. We're hiding behind a pretty large clothing rack filled with a variety of pants. Nobody should be able to see us.

Suddenly, I feel my spy watch vibrate, and I answer the voice call and stick my headset in my left ear. Maddie does the same with her spy watch and head set.

"You found Chief Robinson, did you?" says Katrina's voice from my headset.

"Yeah," Maddie says. It's weird - I can hear her talk next to me, and I can also hear her voice through my headset too. It's a very weird feeling.

"Good. Keep following him, and I'll tell you when your test is over. Good luck!" And with that, Katrina ends the voice call.

Maddie and I put our headsets away in a small compartment underneath our spy watches, and we secretly sneak out of the store and hide behind Chief Robinson.

Then suddenly, Chief Robinson dashes out of the store he's in and sprints towards the first entrance he sees.

"That's our cue," I hiss. "Let's follow him!"

We dash after him, but by the time we get to the entrance, Chief Robinson has disappeared into the parking lot.

"Well, we failed our mission," sighs Maddie.

"You don't say," I scowl. "Now let's go call Katrina and tell her that we failed-"

"STEF!!!"

I turn around, and to my absolute shock, I see none other than Natasha, happily rushing towards us.

"Oh, uh, hi!" I say. I don't know what else to say.

"I'm here with my mom, she's in some clothing store right now," says Natasha. "Did you see Riley earlier?"

"Yeah, we ran past her cause we were trying to find our parents," I reply quickly. What else am I supposed to say? Oh, we ran past her cause we didn't want to talk to her cause we were busy on a mission that I can't tell you about because I'll be in trouble if I do and we don't want that to happen doesn't work. Wow, that was one long run-on sentence.

"Is that Maddie?" Natasha has met Maddie once, but doesn't remember what Maddie looks like.

"Yeah, that's her," I confirm.

"Hey Maddie," says Natasha.

"Hi," responds Maddie shyly.

"Well, uh, we'd better get going, we're supposed to leave the mall, um, right now," I say quickly. I have no clue if we're actually supposed to leave the mall

"Oh okay, I'll see you tomorrow!" Natasha exclaims. Maddie and I say bye to Natasha, and we quickly run away. Once Natasha's out of view, I say to Maddie:

"We should probably call Katrina right now, and we'll tell her that we failed, and we'll ask her what we have to do now," I decide.

"You're calling her, I'm scared of what she's gonna say," replies Maddie immediately and fearfully.

"Fine," I grumble. "As usual." I take out my headset, stick it in my left ear, and voice call Katrina.

When I hear a beep, I say, "We failed our mission. What do we do now?"

"Well," says Katrina's voice. "You can meet me at Entrance 1 and I'll pick you up. Then we'll discuss what happened during your mission."

I look at Maddie, and I think she can tell I'm worried - no, PANICKING.

"That's all, I'll see you later," I say nervously. I hang up, and turn to Maddie, who doesn't look too eager to find out what Katrina said.

"What did Katrina say?" Maddie asks. Well, you can forget what I saw earlier.
