The week before our topic selections are due and Maddie and I have to do our tests, Mr. Steadman decides he's going to surprise us with some news. This news better be good.
"Guess what?" Mr. Steadman says excitedly first thing when he comes into the science lab. Norma, Natasha, and I look at each other. We never know what Mr. Steadman has on his mind, because he's very unpredictable.
And what he says is, well...unexpected.
"All the seventh and eighth graders in the school will be going on a field trip to the movie theatre!"
Instantly, there's chaos in the room. Half the class cheers. The other half asks, "What movie are we watching?"
"The second movie in the 'City in Ruins' series," Mr. Steadman answers. 'City in Ruins' is this dystopian novel series, sort of like 'The Hunger Games'. I don't really like 'City in Ruins', and I've never read the books or watched the first movie.
Well, looks like I have to do some research and reading when I get home from school if I want to understand the movie when we go to watch it...oh wait, I have Observation and Body Language classes today.
"Any of you read the 'City of Ruins' series?" I mutter to Norma and Natasha.
"Nope!" exclaims Natasha. "I don't really like books like those."
"Not yet," replies Norma. "I keep reminding myself to read it, but I always forget. What about you?"
"I'm going to read it, so I understand the movie when we watch it," I answer.
Mr. Steadman tells us more about our field trip, which will take place at the end of the month. Then, he tells us about our health projects.
"I noticed that some of you haven't been contributing much to these health projects, and I'll be calling some people up to talk about the projects," says Mr. Steadman sternly, while looking at all of us seriously. "I'll be asking you questions about your projects as well."
Mr. Steadman tells us to read until he's done asking us about the projects. And guess who he calls first? Definitely not me.
Okay, okay, it was me.
I walk over to the lab table where my tri-panel display and Mr. Steadman are. He's holding a sheet of paper clipped onto a clipboard and a pen.
Mr. Steadman asks me some questions about the projects, which goes well, and then he asks:
"Tell me, did Nadia and Serena help you with the project?"
"No, they were too busy arguing to even notice that I needed help with the project," I reply eagerly. Please Mr. Steadman, please give them a D- for the project, and give me an A++.
All was well in the end, because Nadia and Serena both got D-'s, and I got an A++. I'm sure Mr. Steadman is a mind reader in training. He just doesn't want to admit it.

A week later, Maddie and I are at the agency headquarters, doing our Locks and Codes test first. We're in room 4B, and Chris, a guy in his late twenties, and Katrina are timing us to see how fast we can break open each type of lock.
Maddie and I are both trying to open locks that are usually unlocked with a key. We're using bobby pins to open the locks.
"Open up, lock!" hisses Maddie in frustration. I'd go over to help her, but Chris and Katrina are watching us.
Five minutes later, Maddie and I have opened our locks, but we both have red and sweaty hands.
"Wow, that was hard," sighs Maddie.
