Reflections of the Fluttering Wings

The air had shifted.

Harith stood just beyond the treeline, his boots brushing against dew-covered grass as the jungle behind him exhaled a quiet sigh-like it had finally released him. The canopy gave way to a field so still it almost felt untouched by time. And there, rising like a dream from the ground itself, was the palace.

It wasn't grand in the way he expected. No soaring towers or monumental gates. It was delicate-built with pale stone that shimmered faintly under the dim sky, wrapped in flowering vines that curled with purpose. Its roof curved in gentle arches, and its pillars were carved with intricate butterfly motifs, their wings spread wide in permanent flight. But what truly made Harith pause was the way the palace seemed to be... breathing.

A thousand butterflies-of every hue imaginable-danced through the field. Some glowed faintly, others shimmered in shadows. But the dominant colors were unmistakable: velvety purple, dusky pink, and inky black. They swirled like a veil around the palace's edge, parting only as he stepped forward.

There was a sweetness in the air. A strange aroma, like lilacs and something softer-almost nostalgic. It didn't feel poisonous, only... too pleasant. The kind of sweetness that dulled your instincts.

Cautiously, Harith approached the entrance. The stone steps were warm beneath his feet, as though the palace retained the sun's memory. He raised a hand to knock-but before his knuckles met the door, it creaked open on its own. Just a crack. Just enough.

He hesitated. Every nerve in his body twitched with warning.

And yet, he stepped inside.

The corridor that greeted him stretched impossibly long. Much longer than the palace's exterior suggested. The polished floor reflected the flickering lanterns on the walls-some burning with cool violet flames. Every few steps, tall arched windows opened to the outside, and from each one, the butterflies fluttered lazily, drifting through the air like whispers of memory.

But it wasn't the silence that unsettled him. It was the windows.

Each one acted like a portal to a moment. A memory. His.

There was Harley-deep inside the Eruditio Library-poring over a dusty tome, his brow furrowed in concentration. Harith remembered how peaceful that moment had felt. He had dozed off briefly, lulled by the soft flipping of pages and the warm quiet of the old library. And then... Harley had made a mistake. A powerful spell had backfired-casting something unintended. That was the first time Harith had felt the strange energy in his soul. The moment that began everything.

The next window flickered and shifted.

There was Harley again-some time later-standing over the body of Faramis. His hands shook. The magic crackled uncontrolled. Harith wasn't even awake for it. He had only stirred when the air changed-when the pressure in the room became suffocating. Harley had fainted before he could explain what had happened. That memory always lingered in the corner of Harith's mind, never fully formed, always haunting.

More scenes passed as he walked.

Glimpses of missions-one of many-their blades clashing against shadowbeasts, the two of them learning to move together, cover each other. Harley's laughter echoing even during the chaos of battle, and Harith's silent, growing trust.

Another pane revealed the night Harley had confessed something quietly-how he always felt the magic within him wasn't fully his. How he feared what he was becoming. Harith hadn't known how to respond then. He simply stayed with him, sat by him, made sure Harley knew he wasn't alone.

Scene after scene.

Moment after moment.

Some painful. Some beautiful. All of them peeling back Harith's defenses like layers of his armor.

His pace slowed. His chest felt heavy. The corridor stretched endlessly.

He clenched his fists. "Why are you showing me this?" he muttered, his voice almost swallowed by the vast silence. "What am I supposed to feel?"

The butterflies didn't answer. But they circled him, closer now, wings brushing his skin like ghostly fingers.

Something inside him snapped.

With a cry, Harith turned and shattered one of the windows with a pulse of magic. Glass exploded outward, shards caught in suspended animation as the butterflies flared up around him like smoke. But even before the pieces hit the ground, they reassembled-like nothing had ever happened.

The corridor returned to its eerie calm.

That's when the figure appeared.

From the end of the hall, light gathered in soft spirals. Butterflies clustered into a silhouette-a graceful form. Zhuxin.

She floated rather than walked, every step a glide of elegance, robes trailing like ink in water. Her presence was serene, yet commanding. Ethereal, but not fragile.

"Beauty is only the truth you are willing to see," she said softly-her voice gentle, melodic, but echoing like a hymn.

Harith straightened, his body tensing instinctively. His pulse was racing, but not out of fear. Out of readiness.

He didn't know what Zhuxin truly was-not yet-but he knew this moment was the threshold. Behind her lay the answers.

And maybe... the end of everything.
