they are five when they meet. a mean girl just called calum ugly and he's crying, lying on his stomach, face wet with tears hidden under his arms. he's under the table, sobbing quietly when the new student, a boy with blond hair and beautiful blue eyes sits next to him and pats his shoulder gently.

"you okay ?" he asks, and calum shrugs, refusing to look up. he doesn't want people to see him like that. "she was wrong you know." the blond continues, gentle hand still on calum's body. "I think you're really pretty." this makes the older boy look up, plump lips in a pout. his eyes are still full of tears, and the blond in front of him is kind of blurry.

"you think so ?" he sniffs, regretting it as soon as he hears the horrible sound, but the blond doesn't seem to mind.

"you're the prettiest boy i've ever seen." he even says, blue eyes shining with joy as he sees a smile appear on calum's face. he takes his hand gently, helps him stand up, before pointing excitingly at the toys. "c'mon lets go play."calum doesn't even have time to answer, before the younger boy's hand tightens around his and he's being pulled towards the toys.the tears on his face are gone, a wide smile replacing them.

they are ten when luke gets his first girlfriend.they've been friends for five years and calum isn't used to having to share his best friend. they spend all their free time together, playing xbox or listening to the bands mali's friend told them about. but they never talk about girls, and calum isn't even aware that it might be something luke is interested about. so when luke comes over one afternoon and tells him that mia and he are now dating, he just starts laughing. it's when he sees luke glaring at him that he stops, tilting his head to the side and furrowing his eyebrows.

"oh, you're being serious."the younger boy nods, smiling, and calum feels guilty for laughing at him. "i didn't know you liked her."luke shrugs. "she's pretty." calum can't help but remember of that time luke had called him pretty, and wonders if that means he would date him too. "that's cool, i guess." he has to admit he's a bit jealous, but he doesn't mind it that much, he knows that no girl could ever come in between them.

Luke just called to say he couldn't come to their weekly movie afternoon, saying that mia wanted to hang out with him and that he couldn't say no. but calum isn't an idiot, he knows that that actually means that he'd much rather spend his afternoon kissing a pretty girl instead of watching a movie with his boring best friend.he spends the rest of the day lying in bed, hidden under his comforter, cuddling his stuffed giraffe, wishing it was luke instead. he falls asleep, waking up a couple hours later, before falling asleep again. when he wakes up for the second time it isn't to his older sister closing her door loudly, but to his best friend shaking him. He doesn't even have to open his eyes to know it's him, he just knows it is, and he refuses to open his eyes. The younger boy sighs, and calum feels him retract his hand, and he's not sure if he's happy about it or not.
