When people are young, or even when they're old and frail, new things excite us. To Calum, Australia was boring, and an island prison in the middle of the Pacific and Indian Ocean. He was stuck there, until a few months ago. Calum finally turned 18, earned enough notes to get him and his friend Michael, two tickets to California.

Calum loved to fathom the idea of him living alongside Michael in California. They would land in Eureka, drive down the coast, and end up somewhere down near Hollywood. Maybe Calum could meet new friends, he could maybe meet his husband. Michael and Calum always had a close relationship, but they swore never to date the other. They were joined at the wrist, but always strictly platonic. Even weirder that Calum didn't believe in soulmates, and hates the idea of being forever.
So in ten minutes, Calum and Michael would get the rental car to drive down the coast of the golden state.

"Here you go, boys." The dealership manager handed the keys to Michael, judging that he was older by a year.

"Where yah goin'?"

Calum grinned at the keys in his navy blue haired friend's hands. "Well, it's a road trip. We're just following the coast."

The man laughed, throwing his balding meaty head back. "That's the spirit! Now if ya're headin' down south, make to check out the Santa Cruz area. My son's friend works in a small coffee shop called Oceanside, she can hook you up with all the great beaches that are barely visited. By the way, do you boys surf?"

Michael smiled shyly and shook his head. "No, sir." The man laughed again, a loud sound. "Don't call me sir, that makes me feel old! Go on ya're adventure, but look for Topeko at Oceanside!" Calum nodded, and led Michael over to the car.

The car wasn't new, it was from 2004, but Michael prayed that it ran alright. It was a silver Acura Honda, the SUV kind with the four doors and the surf rack on the top, also with an all black interior.

"Cal, look. It's an emo's dream!" Michael joked, earning a slap on the arm from the younger boy. They climbed in, Michael driving first, and Calum in shotgun. He started the ignition, and the car spluttered to life. Michael sighed in relief, and backed the car out of the parking lot.

"Calum, how much money do we have?" Michael asked once they hit the freeway. Calum sighed and ruffled his black and blonde highlighted hair.

"Maybe about 8,000?" Michael whistled, his green eyes shifting towards Calum for a millisecond.

"Okay, great. Why don't you get some sleep so at night you can drive." Calum grinned, "Alright. But if you stop for food and don't notify me, I will crash the car." Michael sarcastically laughed, but he knew Calum was serious. It took him a little, but he finally found the little knob that lowers the seat to a sleeping position. Calum silently cheered, and moved the seat down. Last he checked, they were in a town called Tyee City, and there was fog along the road, obstructing only all around us . He stared up at the sky and finally slipped into some sleep.
