July 10, 2023/Rose
So, I got to playing, learning the basics of the game while playing with Tyler. I learned a few things, like what to use for what person, and I found it fun. A little scary, for some reason, but fun.
"Rose, you should go Kapkan and place all five traps on a door," Tyler said into his mic. His current home was really nice, from what I had heard. Very sweet parents, and they were working with Tree for some arrangement. Honestly? I didn't want him to live with us, but I wanted to know he was there. Like a person to lean on.
On that afternoon, I decided to sneak into Harley's house. It seemed empty; no cars around, but something was shaking me. I couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. Maybe I did something wrong, or something happened to her.
Nah. She was fine.
I climbed in through her window, climbing into her bed and just laying there. It seemed nobody had slept on it for a few days. Maybe they were on vacation, and they had no internet. I looked on top of her closet. Sketchbook was gone, meaning she was in fact on a trip. Worked for me.
I went into the kitchen, where I found a note for me.
"On vacation to remote island, no data. Should be back 7/12 - Harley." She knew me so well. I sighed, grabbing the note and putting it in my pocket. But something was still wrong. I could feel it.
I went home, where Taylor seemed... down. Like something happened. So I asked. "What happened, Tay?" She put on a smile and shook her head.
"Nothing kid, just got a little too in my head, that's all." I wanted to call her bluff, but who was I to do that? I shrugged and went to my room, ready to sleep before I would go over and greet Harley in person.
I didn't think my life could get worse after everything that happened with my parents. But the universe has a way to prove me wrong, every single time.
I was able to fall asleep easily, but at 4:17 AM, I felt something stirring. The energy in my room had shifted, and it wasn't in a good way. I decided to go get water, then go back to sleep.
It was a while before I could. But I did, and when I woke up, it was to Taylor's sobs, in the living room. I didn't even care about my routine, I was worried for Taylor, so I ran down to her. When she saw me, she cried louder. Now I was getting scared. I saw Tree behind her, not doing good either, but doing a much better job at hiding it. It was 9 AM, why was Taylor sobbing and Tree drinking wine to hide her feelings. "Taylor?" I asked, and I moved to sit down next to her. I wrapped her in a hug, not knowing what else to do.
"It's Harley," Tree said, since Taylor couldn't. My eyes widened, panic setting in as I felt my heart drop to my feet. Where was she? Did they not make it back safely? Were they moving? Tree cleared her throat before continuing. "They were going to go on a vacation four days ago, come back today. They never made it to the airport." What did that mean? Taylor was somewhat calm, but still hysterical. "A drunk driver hit their car and they swerved, hugging the tree." My arms dropped a little, and my face started feeling wet.
"Is she okay?" A beat. "Tree, is my girlfriend alive?" I asked, voice cracking. After a few seconds, the verdict was revealed as Tree shook her head.
I cannot tell you how it felt. Only one who loses someone close to them like I did might understand. Instantly, I started sobbing, overpowering Taylor's cries. My love, my baby, was gone because of an idiot who decided to get behind that wheel drunk. "No," I said, hoping this was some sick, demented prank. Was that why Taylor was so weird these past days, avoiding conversation?
"She passed from her injuries at 4:17 AM," Tree said, solemnly looking down. That's what that energy shift was. I was inconsolable now, remembering our first time meeting, the first sleepover, first date, our first kiss. Every memory
I had made with her came rushing back.
"She can't be, I saw her note- I was gonna- I can't b-" I tried putting words together but was cut off by my own sobs and gasps. Tree grabbed my hands, laid me down, head on Taylor's lap.
"Breathe, Rose. Breathe." Couldn't. "Kid, look at me." I opened my eyes. "In, out. Good. In, out."
Tree brought a fan over, and she led by example. I tried copying her more, but couldn't breathe without letting out a sob. Taylor turned into mom mode now, still crying but trying to calm me down.
"Rose, it's going to be okay," Taylor said, rubbing my back. "I promise. Here, let's go to your room."
