Old man's pov:
The students huddled together beneath the crumbling arches of the grand staircase, the mansion looming above them like a sleeping beast. Dust floated through the still air, catching the last fading rays of the afternoon sun. Their chatter faded to a hush as an old man the caretaker stepped into view, a thin, fragile figure wrapped in worn robes.
He paused, surveying the young faces before him, his misty eyes seeming to peer through them, into something deeper. With a slow, raspy breath, he spoke.
"This mansion," he began, his voice hoarse with age, "was once the heart of a kingdom now forgotten by time. The Kingdom of Engene."
The students exchanged wary glances, some shifting on their feet. A few had heard the name before a fairy tale from childhood, a myth whispered in dusty books but none had expected to hear it spoken with such solemnity.
The caretaker continued, the weight of memory clinging to every word.
"At the center of that kingdom was Prince Solon beautiful, wise, and beloved beyond measure. By his side stood two brothers, not of blood but of bond: Knight Heli and Knight Jino. Loyal to their prince, they swore their lives to his protection."
He paused, letting the story sink in, before lowering his voice.
"Jino, the younger, was a man of rare kindness and pure heart. It was said that he carried the warmth of the sun itself. Over time, a love grew between Prince Solon and Jino secret, forbidden, and all-consuming."
The hall seemed to draw in a collective breath. Sunghoon, standing stiffly among the crowd, felt a strange ache bloom in his chest, sharp and unexplainable. Jake shifted closer without realizing it, a deep frown settling on his features. Heeseung remained still, his face carefully blank, his fists hidden deep in his pockets.
"But not all love is destined for joy," the caretaker said grimly. "The older brother, Heli fierce, proud, and bound by duty discovered their secret. Whether out of jealousy, loyalty, or something darker, he carried the truth to the king."
The students leaned closer, caught in the dark pull of the tale.
"The king, enraged at the betrayal of royal blood, condemned his own son. Prince Solon was locked within his gilded chamber a room once meant to be his sanctuary. And there," the old man's voice broke, "the king ordered fire to be set."
A gasp rose from a few students, quickly silenced by the heavy weight of the caretaker's sorrowful tone.
"Flames devoured the prince's wings before they could ever take flight. His cries echoed across the kingdom cries of pain, betrayal, and a love that could never be saved."
Jake closed his eyes briefly, a flicker of grief tightening in his chest. He glanced at Sunghoon again, noticing the younger boy's pale skin and haunted expression, as if some part of him some hidden place in his soul remembered.
Meanwhile, behind them, Heeseung stared at the cracked stone floor, hiding the turbulent storm behind his dark gaze. His heart pounded with old memories, twisted by anger, by guilt, by things he could never speak aloud.
"And what of the knights?" one student asked nervously, breaking the thick silence.
The caretaker turned his hollow eyes toward them.
"Some say Jino wept for the prince until his heart broke. Some say Heli never shed a tear that he stood outside the burning door, watching the flames dance in his brother's betrayal." His voice lowered into a whisper, barely audible over the creaking wind. "Some even say the traitor was cursed to walk these halls forever, doomed to meet the prince's soul again... and to choose whether to save him or destroy him once more."
A cold gust swept through the shattered windows, rattling the broken chandeliers and causing more than a few students to shiver. Nervous laughter scattered through the group, though it could not fully chase away the heavy feeling that clung to the air like mist.
But for Sunghoon, Jake, and Heeseung, it wasn't just a legend.
It wasn't just a story.
It was a past life clawing its way back into the present.
And this time, the ending was not yet
The silence that followed the caretaker's tale was thick and heavy, like fog pressing against their lungs. No one dared to move, caught between awe and unease. Even the air itself seemed to hum with the weight of old grief.
It was Sunoo who finally broke the stillness, his voice soft but clear.
"What happened to the knights?" he asked, his wide eyes reflecting the dim light of the broken chandelier above. "Did they... die too?"
The old man turned his gaze toward Sunoo, his wrinkled face unreadable. For a long moment, he said nothing, as if searching for the right words in the dust of the past.
"I do not know," he rasped at last, shaking his head slowly. "Some say they disappeared... swallowed by guilt, by sorrow. Others say their lives ended quietly, forgotten by time, just like their prince."
A few students shifted uncomfortably, glancing over their shoulders at the yawning dark hallways that stretched beyond them.
The caretaker's voice dropped lower, almost conspiratorial, as he leaned slightly closer to the group.
"But..." he whispered, eyes gleaming with something cold and knowing, "there is a rumor."
He paused, letting the tension coil tighter around them.
"They say that deep within the forest... near the ruins of the old prince's graveyard... some people have seen him."
The students held their breath.
"Knight Heli," the old man said, voice like the crackling of dying embers. "Wandering alone. His armor rusted, his sword broken. A ghost, cursed to linger where he once chose betrayal over love."
The chandeliers above them groaned against the wind as if reacting to his words, and somewhere deep in the house, a door slammed shut without warning.
A shiver ran down Sunghoon's spine.
He could almost see it a lonely figure, cloaked in regret, trapped forever in the shadow of the boy he couldn't save.
And standing just a few steps away, Heeseung smiled to himself a slow, cold smile unseen by anyone.
The past wasn't finished.
Not yet.
