CHAPTER 1:

I walked on the shoreline of the Florida beach, staring out towards the ocean as the sun began to set. The serenity was something that I could never describe. It simply brought me to another world, where I was free of my life. It was my escape from everything. As the sun disappeared behind the horizon, the sky remained red and orange. I began to walk back to my house, when I heard someone screaming my name.

"SKYLER, SKYLER, SKYLER!!!"

I could not identify the person running towards me, but the voice sounded oddly familiar. I made the person out to be a girl, but she was too far away to hear well enough what she sounded like. I could not tell if she was scared or exited, but I was concerned. As the person got closer to me, I realized it was my little sister, Elizabeth.

"What's wrong Liz? Why are you out here alone? I thought you were at Emily's!" I asked as she gave me a hug.

"DAD IS BACK! DAD IS BACK!"

she cried with tears of joy.

I grabbed my five-year-old sister, picked her up, and began to run back to the house with her. We hadn't seen my dad in almost a year now. He was in the military, and was sent off to a location we were not qualified to know. My dad meant everything to me. Besides Liz, he's all I have. My dad was gone practically years at a time. Mom was everything to me. She was my best friend, my teacher, and the one person who could cheer me up when I was down. But she's gone now.

I ran into the driveway with Liz on my back. My dad. The thought just lingered in my head. After almost a year, I would finally see my dad. The man who risks his life to provide for his two daughters, although I have to pay many of the bills. I never know whether to be happy or mad. He left us when we needed him most. He left us. He left me. I saw his car in the driveway, a large camo jeep.

As I walked in the door and set Liz down, I stood up, and my heart stopped.
