I was running, ten dead running corpses behind me. Through the dark corridors, I saw the exit. all I had was bag of medical supplies slung over my shoulder. I heard the corpses, getting closer. Finally I reach the door, I quickly try and open the door with no success once again I had hit a locked door, the corpses were only meters away. I didn't know what to do, cornered. My only escape would be through the window behind me.

A few months earlier

It was a normal Monday evening for my family. We were all sat silently eating with the TV quietly talking in the background. "So how was your day at work?" I ask my wife Zoe as she looked to be stressed. "Long" She answers "We had over a hundred injury's which just didn't make sense, It was like people were randomly dying and now I have hours of paperwork to file".

I was confused, how could people just randomly die but I just guessed there must have been some random reason that it happened to them. "Can people just die?" Asks Jason my 10-year-old son from the other end of the table. I didn't want to lie but at the same time I didn't want to scare him, I looked over at Zoe who looked puzzled to on how to answer it. "People only die when their body is ready and for those people who died today must have just been ready" I answered feeling like that was the right thing to say.

The TV carried on buzzing on about something in the background and it was rather distracting so I turned it off, It couldn't have been that important. After we finished eating I was about to go get my laptop when the power completely went throughout the whole house.  "Why did that happen?" Zoe asked me. "I think the powers gone because I swear I paid the electricity bill this month already" I explain. I look out the window and see that most of the street had no light either.

The next morning I woke by the sound of my alarm clock buzzing in my face with the numbers 6:00 printed on the front of it. I say goodbye to Zoe before quickly grabbing some toast and leaving to go to work. I was just about to get in my car when I saw my neighbours quickly grabbing boxes and cramming them into their cars. "Hey Mike, you late for a holiday or something?" I chuckle.

He looks at me with a worried face and replies with "What the fuck David haven't you seen the news?". "No I don't have time for that stuff" I answer. "You need to get out of here, take Zoe and your son with you" Mike told me "There's not a lot of time left". I didn't know what he was talking about and if I carried on talking I would be late for work so I drove off towards the office.

A few hours later I was in my office just doing my work when I got a call from my wife telling me to get back home as fast as I could because something had got into the house. I got to my car and started to drive not even realising I was the only person in the office that day. But what did she mean by 'Something'? I thought to myself over and over again, was it an animal? All i knew is that I needed to get back.

When I pulled up to my house the door was swung open and one of the windows had been smashed, I ran in expecting to see some kind of fox or something like that but it was far worse than I had ever expected.

It's skin was grey and rotted all over, his eyes looking right at Zoe and Jason who were stood at the stairs trying to protect themselves from it. The shit he was wearing had a tear right through the middle. I run and jump on it taking him down to the floor where I see his face, Bloodshot eyes and a massive gash going right through his face. He tries to bite and scratch but I had him pinned down in such a way that he couldn't.

"Honey, can you call the police?" I ask calmly as I hold him down. "I've already tried the number isn't responding" Zoe shouts "Just get it out of here".

I had an idea but it didn't seem very practical as the guy had only broken into our house but I didn't even know if he was a man. "Can you take Jason upstairs quickly so I can 'get rid' of this guy" I ask politely. I quickly let go and run to the kitchen to grab a knife or something that can help me, The thing wasn't long behind as he ran into the kitchen after me but I was ready and stuck a knife right into his chest. Blood sprays all over the floor and me as I let go of the knife he falls down to the ground.

Not knowing what just happened I fall to my knees and start to cry thinking of what I just did to my family, I could go to jail and never see Jason or Zoe again. I could hide the body and clean up any evidence but I will always know that I killed a man. After closing the door and shutting the curtains so nobody can see what happened I call the others down. I didn't know who was more scared Zoe or Jason, both of them looked blankly at me not knowing what to say. I already put the body out of sight but what I didn't think of was the blood all over my shirt.

It didn't take us long to realize what had happened, All the people who had randomly died in the past few days didn't completely die and now they have come back but not like they were before, now they hunt flesh and do what they can to get it.

Present time

I look around to see my options, Jump out of the window behind me or face the undead with all I had in my hands which consisted of a rusty crowbar and a small knife in my pocket. I didn't want to take my chances with them so I started hitting the window with my crowbar knowing that's only alerting more of them but it's my only way out.

The window finally smashes and just in time as the once dead start to run at me but I jump out the building before they can even touch me. Falling two stories never felt so long, it was like life had been slowed down but I still hit the floor as hard as possible. I look down as see that I landed right on top of my right hand, pain goes through me and lay on my back trying not to scream in pain. I heave myself up, picking up the bag and my crowbar. I started to run again. I check the bag of supplies from my bag and luckily nothing was badly broken so I picked up my crowbar and started to run, Hitting anything in my way.
