It had been a week since we moved over to the farmhouse and it still seemed too good to be true, each day we would go out and do chores like anyone else would (I was limited to these because of my arm) But most days consisted of going of to make sure the gates still up fine and keeping the place well away from the dead. Zoe and Jason were still asleep and I didn't want to wake them so instead I went outside to see if anything interesting was going on out there. It seemed to be a misty morning and Joe was out there like every morning; Smoking a pipe as he normally does and staring into the abyss.

"Morning David" He says without even looking

"How did you know it was me?" I asked

"You come out here every morning, I know the sound of your footsteps"

"Isn't that a bit weird?"

"Not weird, useful actually if somethings behind me the I'll know"

I didn't know much about Joe but what I did know was that he's a smart man, he knows his way around and if anything he's the leader of this place. He continued to smoke on his pipe while I sat next to him staring into the tree's surrounding the farm. I don't know how long we were sat there but next thing I knew Joanne was telling us to get in for breakfast.

Since we moved into the house I thought there would only be small meals and that day we first came must have been some sort of celebration but somehow everyday there seems to be a meal on that table waiting for everyone. Breakfast isn't a big meal in this house, it usually is just some sort of grain with milk which actually doesn't taste that bad comparing to some of the things we had to eat back in the city.

"We've got a problem folks" Phil announced "We're nearly out of food, now don't be worried all we need to do is set up a hunting expedition or go into the city and go to low populated areas to raid some shops of what ever they've got left"

"I would help with the hunting but my arms fucked" I complained

"Language!" Lily shouted as she normally does when someone makes a bad comment or say's something she doesn't like

"Sorry Lily, I just want to help and with my arm there's not much I can do, I guess I could go into the city with some people"

"Am I allowed to go hunting?" Jason asks from the other side of the table "It's so boring here and I want to help"

"Jason, I'm sure your father won't want you to and also it's a dangerous thing to get into" Andre says "Plus me and Joe can't just take you out of the gates without extra supervision just in case we need to get out quickly"

"Maybe it would help to teach Jason this... Just in case" Said Phil

"as long as he's safe and I can come to keep an eye on him then I will allow it" I say.

Jason carried on for the rest of that day waiting for the time to come, patiently waiting at the door for someone to come up to him and say it's time to go but first we needed to finish off a few things around the farm. Zoe didn't like the idea of Jason hunting but if for any reason we had to leave then it could be useful for his future.

It was about 5 by the time I heard from Jason, he asked me if it was time to go yet, he seemed so eager to go which made me question if this was even right; yes he might need this later in life but if he ever gets hurt I would never forgive myself. Zoe didn't want him to go hunting and I could tell some of the other people thought it was a bad idea but if we never let him do this it might ruin our chances of surviving later on. I still decided to take him out, in the end it was my choice to let him and I needed to show him this.

The time came around when the sun was starting to set and Joe went out into a small closet where he picked out a rifle and started to walk back to the house. Jason was already up by the time he saw the rifle and Joe walking towards him, Andre also started to walk over too.

"You ready to go?" Joe asked us both

"Isn't it a bit late?" I ask looking out at the sun setting

"The night is the best time to go" Andre explains "The animals think we've gone and we shouldn't bump into any of the dead"

We walked off into the woods that surrounded the farm, it was quiet and we all looked at each other with confusion because Andre had stopped in the middle of the path without saying anything.

"I think I see something" Andre whispered as he took the hunting rifle off Joe and pointing it right in front of him. He shot making hardly any noise, and we ran over to where the bullet went. On the floor was a small deer with a shot in the side of his neck.

"How did you find one that quick?" I asked in amazement

"They all live near here" Said Joe "We just hope we're as lucky as this most times"

"Awesome!" Jason stared

Andre started to try to pull the deer back to the farm while Joe showed Jason the various ways of holding a rifle. We carried on walking through a small makeshift path that must have been made by them in the past few months. Then we stopped and Joe signaled that he saw something so we crouched down so we didn't get seen. Joe put his finger onto the trigger as Jason looked over his shoulder and stared in amazement, i decided to have a look too but he wasn't staring because there was animals. Right in front of us was more people!

"Their people" I say to Joe "Put the gun down"

So he listened and put the gun down so we could go down to see if they were alright. I got down first with Jason right behind me. There was a woman with a boy in her hands who must have been about Jason's age but it looked like he had been bleeding and he was hardly conscious. The woman looked scared, probably because she saw the rifle but as well whatever they've just been through didn't look good.

"Please help us" She cried

"Okay we have a house up this path, Just follow me" Joe said as I took her boy and started to run back up to the farm to get Zoe to try and help.

When we finally got back I bust through the door and put the boy down, everyone was in another room so I shouted for Zoe, when she finally got down I showed her and told her to try and help which she did all she could. Then just as we were about to give up she lifts up the sleeve of his shirt to reveal the one thing that would ruin that woman.

A bite.
