I can't help loving you

chapter seventeen

The shirt was pretty big on me, not like Kevin’s shirts. It reminded me of the first days I was at his house. Everything was so big and elegant, now it just looked normal and…I guess it still looked kind of elegant.

I sighed, thinking of Kevin.

No matter what, I’m not going to let Adam kill him. I’ll do whatever I can, even if it means risking my own life. I love Kevin, even if he doesn’t love me back

I opened the door and saw Adam leaning on the wall. He looked up at me and smirked.

“Are you just going to stand there?” I asked. He sighed and walked in.

Abruptly, I started feeling something. Literally. It was as if waves were coming off of Adam. And then, I knew what it was.

It was…boredom?

What the heck?

“Um…Adam?” I said. He flopped into the bed and put his hands behind his head.

“Yeah?”

“How do you feel right now?” I asked.

Then, I felt another thing. This time, it was confusion. But I wasn’t coming from me, it was coming from Adam again.

“Bored,” he shrugged. The confusion disappeared, but with boredom still left.

Wait a second…what that my power? Being able to tell how people feel? I remembered reading once that my powers could come in anytime.

But that’s it? All I can do is know how people feel?

That sucked…

I could’ve at least gotten a cooler power, like being able to be invisible, or something. That would really help me save Kevin. But no, I had to get stuck with a useless power. I mean, how could it possibly help me? I doubt Adam would let me in exchange for me telling him his feelings.

How on earth am I supposed to use this stupid, worhtle-

“Kate?” Adam snapped me back to reality.

“What?” I asked through clenched teeth. I would feel his confusion again.

“Why do you look like you’re about to kill someone?” he asked. His blank expression could have fooled anyone, but he was actually really baffled.

“Because I just found out that-” I stopped myself just in time.

What am I thinking? I can’t just tell him I have a power! He could wonder why I even have one in the first place, and then he’d find out I’m the white rabbit. And I don’t really want to give him my blood.

“You just found out what?” he asked.

“Err, I just found out I’m gunna have to argue with you until you sleep on the couch and I sleep on the bed,” I lied.

He laughed as he got out the bed. “Yeah, let’s just save some time. I’ll go sleep on the couch.”

I nodded and went to the bed. I slid under the covers as I looked at Adam. He laid down on the couch and put a blanket over himself.

I was standing in the middle of the road. There was fog everywhere.

Where am I?

“Kate! I found you!” Kevin’s voice said.

“Kevin? Where are you?” I shouted. There was silence again.
