It had been a week since the game, and Jenna and Y/n still hadn't talked. They avoided each other, and when they did speak, it was only short and cold replies. Even around their friends, the distance between them was obvious.
During that time, Jenna grew closer to Percy. She trusted him and let him join their group. The others didn't seem too happy about it—especially Y/n.
Y/n didn't like Percy from the start. Something about him felt off, and seeing Jenna with him only made it worse. Every time Percy made her laugh, Y/n's chest tightened.
Jenna noticed Y/n's cold stares but pretended not to. She told herself it didn't matter, that Y/n had made it clear they didn't care anymore. So, she kept Percy close.
The group felt the tension growing. Moments that used to be fun were now heavy with silence, and everyone knew why—but no one dared to say it out loud.
Y/n threw herself into extra hours at the gym, choosing the burn of practice over the sting of watching her best friend—and long-time crush—wrapped up in someone else. No matter how hard she pushed herself, though, every scrimmage ended the same: missed shots, sloppy plays, no sense of strategy. Her focus shattered the moment she'd seen Jenna and Percy hugging, and since then, it felt like her game—and her heart—had been unraveling.
"This is bad," Emma muttered to Joy and Hunter as they sat watching Y/n struggle through practice. Every missed shot, every stumble, was proof of how much she'd changed—and they all noticed it.
"Bad? What's bad is that Y/n and Jenna are acting like strangers! They don't even talk anymore," Hunter clarified.
"Worse than that, someone new's crashing the party. And honestly, I really don't like that Percy White," Joy added.
"We've got to do something. Every time I ask Jenna where she's going, it's always with Percy—and Y/n's not even hanging out with us anymore," Emma ranted.
Hunter sighed, dragging a hand down his face. "So basically, Jenna's busy with Percy, Y/n's shutting us out, and we're just supposed to sit here and watch?"
Joy crossed her arms tightly, eyes still on the court. "I don't know about you guys, but I'm not letting Percy White ruin this whole circle. He's sketchy. I can feel it."
Emma leaned forward, her voice dropping. "Then we need a plan. If we don't step in, Y/n's just gonna keep falling apart—and Jenna won't even notice."
The three of them exchanged a look, the weight of their unspoken agreement settling in. Something had to change.
They came up with a plan: invite Jenna and Y/n separately, without either one realizing the other would be there. Their goal was simple—to remind them of the friendship they'd built and, as concerned friends, find a way to help strengthen the bond that was slowly slipping away.
Y/n was the first to arrive at the coffee shop, immediately spotting her three friends waiting at their usual table. Deep down, she wanted nothing more than to be with them like before—but ever since Jenna's new friend, Percy, came into the picture, it felt like he'd been the wall keeping her away.
"Y/n!" Emma called out, jumping up from her seat before pulling the taller woman into a quick hug. Y/n smiled softly, lifting a hand to wave at the others.
"Hey, guys! Gosh, I missed you all," Y/n said with a grin as she slid into the seat beside them.
"Well, you're the one who's been avoiding us—and skipping out on our cafeteria lunch dates," Hunter said softly to Y/n.
"I'm sorry... I've just been so tied up with practice. You know how it is—the season's only a couple weeks away," Y/n explained.
Joy opened her mouth to reply, but the soft chime of the café's bell cut her off. All four of them turned toward the door, their hearts lifting with the hope that Jenna had finally arrived. And she had—only, to their surprise, she wasn't alone. Percy trailed in right beside her.
