Madeline's POV
I once again was in the corner of the dining hall while every other kid ate there food and I got nothing, not even a place at the table to sit. Instead of sitting here and sulking I decided to go out for a walk. I grabbed one of the coats on the coat rack and left. I walked down the sidewalk and stopped at the bakery to see if they had any free treats out today. Luckily they did so at least I got something to eat, and a small cookie was better than nothing. As I walked I stopped paying attention to where I was going and I started to think of the night that my dad threw me into the orphanage with his usually beer bottle in hand, just the thought made me cry, again. My vision blurred from tears I ran straight into someone.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to run into you please don't hurt me," I said as I huddled into a ball as I laid on the ground waiting to be yelled at our slapped.
"Woah, it's ok. I'm not going to hurt you sweetie. Are you alright?" the man asked.
I looked up at the man wearing sunglasses and a hoodie, he had a beard and his muscles were evident under his hoodie.
"So you're not going to hit me?" I asked slowly getting up.
"No, of course, not why would I do that," he asked.
"Everyone else does," I said in a whisper.
He didn't give a response he just helped me up.
"My names Chris, what's yours," he asked.
"Madeline," I replied.
"Well Madeline, it's getting late why don't you let me walk you home," he said.
"No, no it's ok. I'll get home just fine by myself," I said.
"Ok then, I hope to see you around then," he said.
"Probably not," I mumbled under my breath.
"What," he asked.
"Nothing," I said and speed walked down the sidewalk and back to the orphanage.
