"Coma!? B-but she c-can't be in a coma!" I started to panic.
"Sorry man." The doctor dismissed as he left shortly.
"N-no... This can't be happening right now!" My breathing hitched and picked up. Tears welled up in my eyes. I balled up my fists and slammed them on a nearby coffee table. A few tears had already cascaded down my cheeks.
"Why?..." I threw myself onto the coffee table and sobbed silently to myself.
After sobbing for a good 5 minutes, I wiped away a few of my tears, sniffling. I went up to Rose's bed and pulled up a stool beside her.
"This is all my fault.." I sobbed. "Take me instead..just-just leave Rose.." I looked at Rose with tear-filled eyes. I reached over for her hand gently. Her hand was clasped into a fist... almost like she was holding something.
Her hand softened from my touch. I took that as an opportunity to unfold her fingers from her fist.
"Danny...you're going to be okay..I promise.." She looked at me with wistful tears in her eyes.
I weakly turned to face her. "Would you hold this for me, please?" I said as I reached into my pocket and pulled out the blue and gold plated class ring my dad had given me.
"But why-" She held her hand close to her heart as she looked at the ring resting in the palm of my hand.
"Just hold it for me, Rose. Please." I said as I felt the weight of my eyelids shutting on me.
The last thing I saw was the class ring leaving my hands and entering hers.
In the palm of my hand was the class ring. She still had it? I took the ring from her hand and put it away in my pocket. I held onto her hand. "Rose, if you can hear me, squeeze my hand..." I waited a few minutes to no avail.
"Rose, I-" She suddenly squeezed my hand. Instinctively, the corners of my mouth curled into a smile. "Okay, uhm, let's establish some communication. One squeeze means yes and two squeezes mean no." She squeezed once to confirm. "Rose...I'm so glad you can hear me. This-this is all my fault..I'm so sorry." I looked away as my voice began to waver. My eyes fixated towards the wall as tears welled up again in my eyes.
"I'll find a way to get you out of this coma, Rose." I said with strong determination conquering my voice. "I'll do whatever it takes. Whether it kills me or not." I was about to say more, until I heard my watch's alarm go off.
It was already 10pm. "Rose, I-I have to go..I promise I'll be back tomorrow after school." She squeezed my hand one last time before I took off. Seeing no one around, I let the familiar light blue rings surround me as I transformed from Fenton into Phantom in a flash of bright light. I set trajectories for back home.
*****
Rose's parents were devastated. When they heard the news that their one and only daughter had gone into a coma state, they couldn't take it.
They broke down just like how I had. "We know how much she meant to you, Danny.." Her parents both engulfed me in a bear hug.
"I'm sorry this had to happen, Mr. and Mrs. Williams.." I melted into the hug. This was probably the first time my heart was actually wishing it were dead.
"We're sorry too." They let go.
