I couldn’t hear a word that was being said out in the clearing, and that frustrated me. I watched Carlisle speak calmly to the three of them with Jasper and Emmett directly behind him. I couldn’t help but worry about them, what if they got into a fight or something?
I was starting to feel calm, and I started smiling, despite the situation, I knew it was Jasper. Then things happened so quick. A breeze blew, causing Edward and myself to stiffen. I knew mine and Bella’s scent was being carried across the clearing towards them. Jasper stiffened as well, so I knew they could smell it.
The second man turned around quickly to face Bella and I, he bent down in a crouch and within a second, Jasper was pulling me behind him, a growl emanating from his throat. Edward was already on the ground, poised to attack, letting a snarl so fierce out of his mouth, it caused the hair on the back of my neck to stand up.
The first man looked bewildered, and I caught something along the lines of snacks. The first dose of fear, I have ever felt with the Cullens began to bubble up from the pit of my stomach. I felt safe though, probably Jasper’s doing. Glancing down, I saw he still held my hand within his. I squeezed tightly, not wanting to let go, he squeezed back with as much intensity. I heard Carlisle repeat himself, more sternly, that we were with them, and were not to be touched.
Carlisle called for Jasper. Jasper looked to Edward.
“They don’t want her.” Edward said.
Jasper turned to me, looking at my worried face, then gave me a smile, and said, “You’ll be OK, I’ll make sure of it.”
He squeezed my hand tightly, hurting my fingers. He then pried my hand off his, and walked to Carlisle. He threw me one last smile, over his shoulder as he walked to Carlisle, and I felt reassured. Emmett took Jasper’s place as my protector, shielding me as we all walked briskly to the edge of the clearing, from there hoisted me onto his shoulders and started running.
We made it to the Jeep with incredible speed. I buckled myself in, and kept quiet while listening to all of them trying to discuss a plan of getting Bella out safely. Once again, I was forgotten. Edward was terrifying, he was angry and being extremely protective of Bella, I watched the scene fly past me in the window, knowing he was speeding. Alice persuaded him to pull over, to think of a rational plan for Bella’s escape, I sat and listened to all the ideas that were being bounced back and forth. Bella pitched her plan to Edward who was fuming in the front. Listening to it, it wasn’t bad.
“That’s not bad.” I said, finally speaking up. They all turned to face me.
“What about her?” Emmett said.
“I can stay, I can help. I can go with one of you guys and wear Bella’s clothes, that’d confuse the smell for a little bit right?” I said, my eyes pleading.
Truthfully I didn’t want to be left at home, if I was with one of the Cullens, I knew I would be safe. They all pondered the idea.
“Jasper isn’t going to like that.” said Alice.
“To hell with Jasper!” I said, “I want to help!”
“It would work.” said Emmett looking at Alice.
“OK.” Alice sighed, “but you’re explaining this to him, not me.”
“I can do that.” I smiled.
The plan was finalized with Alice and Jasper talking Bella to Phoenix. I heard Edward ask Alice, “Are you sure Jasper can handle this.”
The words I told Edward earlier whispered back into my mind, “You don’t give Jasper enough credit.”
