It was the last day of school, and Danni couldn't be happier. Only a half day of boredom and then three weeks of uninterrupted bliss. Her mind kept thinking about Nicky. Had she read the letter yet? What did she think? Danni was almost hoping she didn't bump into Nicky today, things could be pretty awkward if her feelings weren't reciprocated.
"Hey," talk of the devil.
Nicky was wearing Danni's favourite dress, and her eyes were automatically drawn to the ample cleavage in front of her face. She wouldn't dress like this if she didn't like the letter, surely?
"Hi," Danni said, trying to appear calm.
The bell rang, signalling the start of the first lesson. Danni looked around, knowing she needed to be heading to Biology sometime soon.
"I need to see you," Nicky whispered, "got a free period?"
"No. And I need to get to a lesson, I don't mean to be rude it's just-"
"It's ok, I'll email your teacher after we are done. I really need to talk."
Now that was an offer Danni couldn't refuse. Following Nicky along the corridor, her eyes were fixed to her teacher's ass. That dress was extremely flattering.
Danni almost walked straight into Nicky when she abruptly stopped. Looking up to see what was going on, her eyes met the headmaster's. Had he just caught her checking Nicky out? He continued taking to Nicky as if nothing had happened, and Danni breathed a sigh of relief. It was a close call.
After a minute or so of what seemed like polite chat, Nicky made her excuses and led Danni to her room. She locked the door behind them and perched on the edge of her desk. Danni went over to the table right in front of Nicky's desk and sat on top of it.
"I read your letter," Nicky stated.
Danni panicked. That didn't sound too good. She looked at Nicky. She wasn't smiling, and her eyes were on the floor. Danni waited for Nicky to continue, and she watched as the teacher raised her head, as her eyes met Danni's.
"I loved it," Danni saw a tear escape Nicky's right eye as she brought a hand up to wipe it away, "it was the most beautiful thing anyone has done for me. I mean it."
"I'm glad you like it."
"I really do."
Danni saw that there was something else that Nicky wasn't letting on. That tear wasn't just out of happiness, there was definitely a tinge of sadness too.
"What is it?" Danni asked, placing her hand on Nicky's shoulder to try and comfort her.
"Linda knows."
"Linda knows what?"
"About us."
"What?"
Danni didn't know how to respond. They both knew the need for complete secrecy about their relationship, yet Nicky appeared to have just blurted it out to her sister. Danni recalled how shocked Nicky had been when she had found out that Lily knew about them, but surely this was worse. Danni knew that Linda hadn't been updated from the start of their relationship, so it was likely that she would view it as completely inappropriate, and that scared Danni. Had Nicky just put her own livelihood at risk by telling her sister?
"I didn't want to, believe me Danni, I didn't, she's a teacher too-"
"Shit that makes it even worse. She's going to be completely against us!"
"She was. To start with. But then I tried to win her round."
"Why did you even tell her?"
"She saw me crying."
"Why were you crying? What does that have to do with us?"
"Your letter. It made me really emotional, she walked in at the wrong time and snatched it off me and read it. She knew your name and that you were a student, and she knew I'd been acting weird. She basically filled in the missing pieces, but I explained everything to her anyway. I didn't want her to get the wrong idea. She wants to meet you."
"What?"
"She wants to meet you."
"What the fuck? Why? I thought she didn't approve! I'm so confused."
"She wants to see if I'm telling the truth."
"Well it's pretty clear you are, you don't get a love letter for nothing."
"Not like that, as in, she wants to see if what's between us is real. If it's actually love or not. She's scared you're my rebound."
"Rebound? What from?"
"Jenny."
"But she was a year ago! Surely Linda doesn't think that-"
"You didn't see me after Jenny, Danni. I was broken. I had a really really bad phase of my life. There were lots of people like you after Jenny."
"What?"
That stung Danni a little. Was Nicky really saying that Danni was just the next in a long line of failures? She thought what her and Nicky had was unique and completely new to the both of them, clearly it wasn't.
"No, not like that. I've never felt the way I do for you about anyone, not even Jenny. I didn't mean it like that I meant younger girls, probably not the most appropriate choices to take the next step with. I was with loads, believing I was in love, but really I was searching for another Jenny in them. They all crashed and burned. It's different with you though, it really is. I just need Linda to see that."
"Ok. How are you planning to show her?"
"There's a wedding."
"Right."
"It's a mutual friend of mine, Linda and Mala's, and it's in January. I'll be allowed to bring someone, and I thought I could bring you."
"And how are you going to introduce me to everyone? "This is my student Danni," or "this is my girlfriend Danni"? Won't there be people there who you don't want to know about us just yet?"
"No. That's the brilliance! Everyone there is going to be from out of town. Our friend, Sean, he lives in Manchester, so that's where most people are going to be from. It will only be Mala, Linda and us from around here," Nicky paused, "and to answer your question. I'll introduce you as my girlfriend. I'm not worried about people there, none of them will know that our relationship is slightly more complicated than it appears. But, more importantly, I'll introduce you to Linda as my girlfriend. You're going to be a massive part of my life, and she needs to start accepting that."
"Won't she report you?"
"No, she wouldn't ever do that, she just wants to know exactly how stupid I'm being: whether I'm risking my job for something meaningless, or whether it's just an awful turn of luck, and we are a solid, strong couple."
"I'll come to the wedding. And I'll show Linda that we are good together."
"Thank you."
"But you owe me a favour."
"Oh really?" Nicky smiled, cheekily.
"Yeah," Danni smirked.
"Like what?"
"I'll think about it," Danni said, biting her lip as she stared straight into Nicky's eyes.
"Fuck that's sexy," Nicky breathed.
"Have a great Christmas, Miss Jones," Danni said in a sultry tone as she got up and left the classroom.
"You too Danni," Nicky smiled at her student as she left the room.
