Ch. 44

A week later, and it was the first of Danni's university interviews. She was absolutely bricking it, and wanted nothing more than for Nicky to be beside her.

All the applicants were registered and handed an introduction sheet. The interview was built to be demanding and stressful and Danni needed to concentrate for every bit or she wouldn't get a place at the university.

There were seven stations testing everything from Danni's empathy to her maths ability. Instead of letting the situation intimidate her, she followed Mala's advice and let it excite her. It was all about medicine, and medicine was what she wanted to do with her life, so why should it scare her?

The first few stations were warm up ones really, a few questions on the personal statement that Danni had written, a simple ratio question and the standard 'why do you want to be a doctor' question. Walking up to the next station, she read through the card. This station was going to test her ability to argue both sides of the story. She was going to get two minutes to read the newspaper article and then she would have to respond by considering both sides, but she didn't have to come to an overall judgement. Danni took a deep breath and entered the room where the station was held. A buzzer went off to signal her time had started and she read the newspaper article briefly.

Danni almost laughed out loud. Not only had she thought about both sides of this issue before, but she had experienced it first hand. The headline read:
SCHOOL TEACHER JAILED AFTER 1 YEAR AFFAIR WITH STUDENT

It turned out that actually, the details were almost exactly the same as in Danni and Nicky's case. They had met outside of school not knowing who the other was, they were similar to Danni and Nicky's ages, but they had had sex, so technically that was a criminal offence. Reading the story, Danni had never felt more grateful that her and Nicky hadn't had sex - it could have been them in the headlines.

The buzzer cut into Danni's thoughts, signalling her time for reading was up. She raised her head and looked directly into the examiner's eyes before making her case.

"Of course their relationship is wrong, it is clearly an abuse of power by the teacher as stated by law. She knew that it would be a criminal offence to have sexual relations with the student, but yet she still continued down that path anyway.
However, who are we to judge? Love often makes us act irrationally and makes us do and say things we normally wouldn't. If the teacher started this sexual relationship out of love, although it is a criminal offence, it is slightly more understandable. There are also several factors in their favour: they met outside of school and are similar in age. This shows it wasn't an abuse of power from the start, it was just a loving relationship that got more complicated."

The buzzer went off again, signalling her time at the station was up. Danni turned as she stood up to look back at the examiner.

The examiner looked shocked, and only responded with "thank you, Danni, that was lovely."

Danni blushed and exited the room. Three more stations to go.

She was physically worn out from all the stations, her mental energy had been zapped from the challenges, and she couldn't wait to be at home, in her bed.

As she got into her car and prepared for the two hour drive home, she thought back to the newspaper article she had to read. She hadn't really thought about it too much at the time, but that was what her and Nicky were facing. If they put a foot wrong there really could be a situation where they saw Nicky get put into jail and charged. It absolutely terrified Danni. She found it hard enough sometimes if she went a day without seeing her in the corridor, how would it be if she could only see her for an hour at a time at a prison visit? The thought of it brought a sick feeling to Danni's stomach, and she rolled down the window to try and get some fresh air in her lungs. Nicky couldn't ever go to jail. Danni wouldn't survive.

These thoughts played over and over in her head, so that by the time she pulled up, tears were rolling down her face. Not caring about the possible consequences to her actions, she pushed open the front door and burst into the house.

A very shocked Nicky appeared in the hallway.

"Danni? What's wrong?"

"I just. I just. I just don't want to lose you," Danni attempting to get coherent words out of her mouth only resulted in the flow of even more tears.

"Shh," Nicky soothed, as she brought Danni into a tight hug, "that won't happen."

They stood there for a while, wrapped in each other's arms, and Nicky stroking Danni's hair comfortingly. Danni was well aware that she was probably getting Nicky's blouse wet with tears and stained with mascara, but the teacher didn't seem to mind.

They parted, and Danni wiped her red now that her tears had stopped, and she looked into Nicky's eyes.

"I'm sorry," she apologised.

"No, don't ever apologise for being sad. You're allowed to. But what brought this on? Wasn't it your interview today?"

"Yes. My interview went fine,"

"That's good then."

"Yes. But I had to read an article, and it reminded me of us, and it really scared
me."

"How come?"

"It was about a schoolteacher who got arrested for having sex with his student."

"Oh."

"Yeah," Danni grimaced.

"Look, Danni. We may or may not have sex before you leave school. Obviously the plan is not to, but it seems that sometimes we can't control ourselves around each other," Nicky smirked, "the first hurdle to jump is to tell your parents. Then we deal with whatever comes next. If we can get through telling your parent without hem reporting me, we are halfway there."

"Then what's next?"

"Well that's the easy bit. We carry on as normal, but we just don't get caught."

"Simple."

"Exactly."

Danni had said it was simple, but was it really? They had thought they were being careful and yet they still got caught out. What if they actually did have sex? Wouldn't that be worse?
