Xavier's POV
"What... the... fuck." Max trailed off, his arms hanging by his sides with a dumbfounded look on his face. To be honest, we were all pretty dumbfounded. The damn girl disappeared! Right before our eyes!
"So... uh... is that normal?" Danny asked, his eyebrows furrowing together, as if he was trying to figure something out.
"Of course it's not normal you dumbass." I rolled my eyes, puffing out a breath of air in pure annoyance. "What the hell is she?" I murmured beneath my breath, leaning my back against the cream colored walls.
"I don't think she's a werewolf." Max commented, crossing his arms together. "I mean, I didn't even get a scent off her. Which is weird, because even humans have scents."
"She's not human. She can't be a werewolf. So she's gotta be something else." I continued on with a thoughtful expression.
Suddenly, I felt my wolf fighting to be let free.
'MATE! MATE!' He growled out, while I just rolled my eyes. No doubt, I felt the same attraction towards the girl, but my wolf was a possessive bastard so I knew that being without her wasn't going to do him any good. But it would do me good. With her not around, I can focus on the task at hand: Killing the Alph-
Shit! I clenched my jaw when I remembered the girl's words to me minutes before we were interrupted:
"You tried to kill my father. I owe you nothing."
My mate, is the daughter of the Alpha I have to kill.
"Holy shit dude! She's your mate?" Max suddenly shouted, his brown eyes widening with shock.
It took me a few seconds to comprehend what he did, and when I did, I sent him a cold glare. "Stay the fuck outta my head, dude!" I growled out. I hated when people listened in on my thoughts. I liked my privacy.
Max shrugged carelessly. "You were practically telling us to listen in with the barrier still open. You tend to forget to close it when you don't want people to know what you're thinking. But still, holy shit! You lucky bastard! Had she been my mate I would've grabbed her and never let her out of my sight! I mean did you see that bod-"
I growled, lunging for him. We tumbled to the ground in a heap, each of us trying to gain the upper-hand and pin the other to the ground. A grunt escaped his lips as he attempted to push me back, but my wolf was in control and he wasn't letting up his grip. I could feel my eyes turn pitch black and a fierce red circle crept around the iris of Max's eyes. He choked for air as I intensified my pressure on his neck, the hairs on my neck pricking and I knew I was close to changing.
"Mine." My wolf growled possessively, and in an instant, my eyes had gone back to their brown color, and my grip loosened.
Max pushed me back in an instant and turned to his side, gasping for air.
I averted my gaze, staring at a shocked-looking Danny. Fear kindled in his eyes and his hands trembled slightly.
Scoffing, I shook my head at his cowardliness. "Relax. I'm not gonna hurt you." I could hear my wolf growling at me from within, still enraged that someone else was talking about his mate so provocatively.
"It's fine, man. I'm alright." I heard Max's sarcastic voice, and I turned my head to see him on his feet again with his hands in his pockets.
I shrugged, refusing to say sorry. "Wolf." The way I said it make it seem like that was the best explanation I had for my actions. In all seriousness, it was though. Max knows not to talk about someone else's mate in such a way he knows will rile up the other person unless he wants a death wish.
Max let loose a small chuckle and rolled his eyes. He rubbed the bruising skin of his neck gently and nodded. "Touché."
"He's going to kill us." I heard Danny mummer beneath his breath, and I laughed at his words.
"Trust me, he wouldn't kill any of us. He wants this too bad so he's not going to risk losing fighters." I assured the frightened boy. It only seemed to work slightly, as his hands stopped trembling. However, I could still hear his heart pumping wildly within his chest and the fear in his eyes couldn't be mistaken for anything else.
"What do we do now though? We don't have any of our targets and Alpha is still expecting the signal to move in. He's going to be pissed when he finds no one is here."
At that, a slow smirk made its way across my face. Max, seeing the mischievous glint in my eyes, smirked deviously as well. "Ahh... I knew you'd have an idea. Well don't just keep it to yourself! What is it?" He asked, staring at me with burning curiosity. Danny also looked at me with the same amount of inquisitiveness as Max.
"The girl may be pretty strong-willed and incredibly smart, but there's no way she can resist my pull forever. I am still her mate and soon, the need to be near me will overwhelm her and she'll go searching for me. But she probably won't want her presence known so she'll stay in the shadows. If I can pick up her scent then I got her." I shrugged nonchalantly.
Danny looked confused. "But she didn't have a scent!" He exclaimed.
I pursed my lips. "Do you think she masked it?" I asked aloud.
Max was the first to respond. "There's no way. To mask your scent you'd have to have a witch do that and-" he stopped short, as if just realizing the impact of his words.
We both looked at each other, knowing exactly what the other was thinking even without the mind link.
"Witches."
We said in unison, an expression of awe mirroring our faces.
"It would make sense," Danny nodded. "If her family was in contact with witches it would mean that their pack would have witches as an ally. And witches are the second most powerful creature out there next to Angels. It would explain why their pack is the strongest. They're allied with witches."
"But why would they need their scents to be masked? Especially her's? They've gotta be hiding something else. There's still so many questions left unanswered! This shit's gonna drive me insane!" He cried in a melodramatic manner, flinging his arms in the air like a crazy lunatic.
Rolling my eyes, I wiped my hands over my face, easing the stress that was weighing down on me.
Finally, I opened my eyes and sighed while giving him a glare. "All we need to focus on first, is finding her, the Luna, or even better, the Alpha-"
"You don't care that the Alpha is your mate's father?" Danny interrupted, disgust hanging off each word.
A pang was sent to my heart, but I shook it off and gave him a casual reply. "No. A job is a job. If I have to kill her father to take than I guess I'm killing her father." I said, refusing to gulp.
"Really?" Max asked this time. "No second thoughts? No last made decisions? No going back?" He asked with doubt lacing his words. He was right to doubt, too. Because honestly, I didn't know anymore.
"No." I said, clenching my fists.
I didn't personally know the man. But I knew that it would make it slightly harder to carry out the plan with my mate's father being the target I have to eliminate.
Could I live with that? Of course.
Could I live with how she's treat me afterwards? There wouldn't be an afterwards, though.
Even if she and I got together as mates, she would never look at me the same. She would never forgive me for killing her father.
She would hate me.
My wolf recoiled at the thought, letting out whimpers of agony just at the image in my mind.
'I want mate! I want mate!'
He whined, and I inwardly shook my head.
That wasn't possible.
So now, it would just have to be a game of cat and mouse.
I looked out the window, scanning the forest out there in wonder.
Don't worry, mate. I'll find you again. I'll make sure of it.
