It was one of those chilly nights where the world felt too quiet and y/n found herself sitting on the couch in her hoodie scrolling aimlessly through her phone. The streetlights outside painted her room in soft orange and her playlist hummed low in the background.
Then her phone buzzed.
"jobe 🤍"
jobe 🤍
can't sleep
Maybe that's because you never stop thinking about football
jobe 🤍
Nah, thinking about you.
She rolled her eyes, smiling anyway. "You're so annoying" she typed but before she could hit send her phone rang *jobe calling*
"are you smiling right now?" he asked the second she answered.
"No" she lied as she tucked her knees under her blanket.
"yes, you are I can hear it" he teased, his voice soft and deep, like he was sitting right beside her.
"you can't hear a smile dummy"
"maybe not, but I know what you sound like when you're happy."
Y/n bit her lip and trying not to let her heart race too fast they have been best friends for a while but lately, every text, every late night call, every small thing he said had started to mean more.
"so what's keeping you up?" she asked playing with the sleeve of her hoodie.
"You" he said simply.
"I was watching that video from last week when we went to the park and you tried to kick the ball and completely missed."
"Wow, you called just to roast me?"
"Partly.." he chuckled. "But mostly because I wanted to hear your voice again."
the silence that followed wasn't awkward it was full, warm ,comfortable.
"you know" she said softly
"you could've just said you missed me."
"I do" he said.
"Every second."
"You're so weirdd" my heart thudded
"Maybe but I'm serious."
She hid her face in her hands, smiling uncontrollably. "you're lucky I like you, bellingham."
"You like me?" he said pretending to sound shocked.
"Don't push it."
Too late she could already hear his grin through the line.
"then maybe you should prove it."
"how?"
"Come outside"
her eyes widened "what?"
He laughed. "Check your window."
She rushed over and peeked outside and there he was, standing in a hoodie and sweatpants under the streetlight, holding two cups of hot chocolate and smiling up at her.
"You're insane!" she said opening the door and running out into the cold.
"Insanely into you" he said handing her a cup.
"Okay, that was so corny" she said laughing but her voice softened when their eyes met.
The night was quiet again but in the best way the kind where it feels like everything in the world has slowed down except the two of them.
"Next time you can't sleep," she whispered
"just come over again."
He smiled, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear
"Only if you promise to stay awake with me."
And when their fingers brushed and the air went still it was impossible to tell who leaned in first but when they kissed, it felt like something that was always meant to happen.
