...

...

...

...

Well...

...

...

...

This was unexpected.

Standing atop the bookshelf overseeing everyone and everything in their zealous gathering, I had the advantage of the high ground. Even if one of them did a cool backflip and tried to slice me with a laser sword, I'd easily be able to defend and return to sender.

But this wasn't a galaxy far, far away.

This was reality.

Yet, I refused to believe what was before me.

The moment the leader threw off their hood, my mind ceased. Time itself was so shocked it had to pause as well.

...

"Heh..." I made a noise, my arms growing sore in the position I held the makeshift gun.

What was this? Why was this? How was this?

Could it be that the exposure to the elements messed with my perception? I had to be seeing things. I was delusional!

"Hah..."

My facial muscles twitched uncontrollably, the words trapped in my throat.

All the while, they were looking at me. Staring back. Awaiting my next move.

...

I couldn't do anything.

Something had to happen or I'd gather a layer of dust.

Fortunately, it did.

"Johnny-"

"Shut it," I cut them off, startled by that voice.

Yes, I had to be imagining things.

First, their species was revealed to belong to the canid order. Second, the robes concealed the rest of their appearance, so I wouldn't have guessed they were female. Third...

Ah, of course.

It was the egg sandwich.

It had gone bad. That's it. I ate an expired sandwich and was now suffering the consequences.

Seriously, if this was real, it'd fit in a circle of hell. The devil couldn't be so cruel as to do this to me...

"Johnny-kun, it's not safe up there."

I didn't get to cut them... her off again, entranced by the illusions I was experiencing.

Since this was a hallucination, I pinched myself to wake up.

In the past, there were few times I dreamed lucidly. I learned from the second experience that if I wanted to leave that place, all I'd need to do was cause harm to myself.

Easy peasy.

So, why wasn't I back in my room?

I thought that this was my subconscious worrying about the showdown – a nightmare before the last day.

But I was still there, atop the bookshelf.

It didn't work.

It should've worked.

Why didn't it work?

...

My teeth were about to shatter under the exerted force.
