Chapter 11: Code Red

We heard some gunshots far away on campus. I grew nervous, sweat becoming evident onto my skin, and Thomas seemed to notice after looking around a bit because he placed his hand over mine and tried to convince me that everything was okay.

I took deep breaths until I heard footsteps coming down the hallway, shutting my eyes closed to keep me stable.

Hopefully the police are here. I thought.

Thomas and I didn't dare move, thankfully the footsteps subsided after passing and walking away a few yards away.

Me and Thomas took a breath, which I suddenly realized we both had held in our breath. Thomas stood up slowly not aware of the broom behind him which cause him to accidentally knock it down.

He hissed and whispered, "Dang it!"

We heard the footsteps come back and Thomas looked up with wide eyes. The person tried to open the door but it was locked.

I shut my eyes as I took tiny breaths. Please don't let this be a serial killer.

"I'll just have to kick it open." The voice was rough, and raspy. I could hear the sound of chains and a click of a gun. Definitely a killer, what a nice and fun way to start off the second week of school too.

Thomas walked up to the door and I grabbed his arm. "Tom. What are you doing?"

"You'll see, get ready to run." Thomas replied. That didn't sound good. We heard footsteps coming back towards the door, fast.

At the last minute, Thomas opened the door and the guy tripped, seemingly bumping his head onto the ground.

Thomas and I jumped over him, hearing him groan a bit, and ran. We saw some students in classes, along with teachers staring at us out the window, looking dumbfounded.

Then I saw an injured kid. I stopped but Thomas kept running. He finally stopped when he realized I wasn't behind him.

"Destiny.. Let's go!"

I shook my head. "We can't just leave him here, he's injured and hurt."

I ran to the injured kid and he looked up at me, flinching a bit. I bit my lip and felt sympathy for him. Thomas helped me pick him up and we continued to walk while carrying him to the side, the boy limping.

We walked until we got to the entrance. I went to the doors as Thomas held the boy and tried to open them. Locked. Ugh.

I walked back over to the boy and Thomas, shaking my head. "It's locked."

The boy flinched as we decided to look around for any other way of escape.

We walked to the back doors, luckily it wasn't locked. We carefully walked out, cautious of the boy and his injury. We went to the front of the building, which had worried parents, police officers, and ambulances.

The boy whispered,"Thank you."

I nodded and brought him to the ambulance as some police officers walked up to us. The boy was taken by the nurses to bring back to the hospital. They nodded and said a thank you and that they're glad we got out safe before heading back to their job.

"Thomas! Your okay!" That was Thomas's mother coming toward us. "And Destiny your okay, too! Are you two hurt in any way? I swear if you two are, I'll beat the bloody-"

"No, we're not hurt." I shook my head and Thomas nodded after my statement.

Then we saw the man, he was handcuffed and bad bruise on his forehead. He was pushing and struggling against the handcuffs. "I'll get you two back for this!"

"No, you won't." The police casually said and pushed him into the police car.

"Thank you." The police said and I smiled. The police got in the car and drove off, along with the ambulance that took away the injured boy whose parents weren't there at the moment and didn't know of the injury.

"We should get you guys out of here." Thomas's mom said, turning around as she held onto our shoulders, pushing us around so our back were turned to the school.

Then we saw more injured kids being carried to the ambulances. I recognized some of them. Lauren, Erika's best friend, was injured.

Along with one of my classmates, I think her name was.. Alyona, I think at least.

Thomas's mom drove me back to my house and I wave to Thomas before he leaves, and he soon waves back before his mom drives off onto the street and farther.

I go inside the house and turn on the tv. It was the news and they were talking about what happened at the school.

Destiny waves at me and I wave back. On the way back, I couldn't help but continue to think about her and how she looked when she was telling me that we had to help the injured kid, and how kind she was.

As I thought, my mom disrupted me. "You know, I really like her. One hundred percent more than that Erika girl you used to date, she's a real keeper."

I blushed and looked down. "I really like her too. Way more than that Erika girl."

She smiled and nodded. "Do you like her like that or just a friend? Why'd you ever like Erika, she was a stuck up brat in my opinion? She didn't even appreciate my cooking!"

I sighed and brushed my hair with my fingers, shrugging. "She was different before."

She shook her head. "People never change. As much as they want to, they don't. I've learned it the hard way, Tom. They never change. Maybe she acted different around you, but I've seen her when you weren't around."

After the ride, I went to my room. I went on my phone until my mom called me to come downstairs, a bit irritated.

She sounded a bit annoyed as she called me to come down. "Thomas you have a visitor!"

She's never irritated so I wonder who it is. I go downstairs and look at the visitor.

Erika.
