"A man has only one way of being immortal on earth; forget that he is a mortal." ~ Jean Giraudoux
Another day another murder to solve it seemed as Henry Morgan looked down at the limp corpse on the ground. The murder had taken place in an alley, which wasn't too unusual, though it was unoriginal. There weren't any obvious signs of an attack on the young child's body except for a swift diagonal slashed mark on their throat, whoever had done the killing, had obviously wanted her dead. Jo walked up behind him and he turned to face her with a grim look on his face.
"Anything you can tell us?" She asked, giving a slightly sad and disgusted expression to the wound on the small child's throat.
"I would say it was done not out of rage or revenge, but from someone who wanted her to keep silent." He replied with a sigh. "Why do people have to kill innocent children?"
"Some people are just sick like that Dr. Morgan." With that she walked off to continue examining the rest of the crime scene.
New footsteps ran up and his new assistant, Evan Hale, came up to join him. "So you don't think it was an accident? Or what about a suicide?"
The young man amused Henry, his theories and enthusiasm were constant, but he wasn't very good at connecting dots in a case yet and was often wrong. It made him miss Lucas occasionally; it was a shame what had become of the promising man. "The arch of the gash means she couldn't have killed herself and an accident wouldn't make such a precise mark."
"What about a murder weapon?" He leaned down, his blond hair casting a shadow across his face. "I would say a kitchen knife? Like one someone would use to cut steak."
"Perhaps, we can get a closer look once we get her body back to the lab." Henry motioned two cops over and allowed them to take the body away before walking over to Jo. "Have you found the murder weapon?"
She shook her head. "They took it with them, they were smart enough not to leave it with the victim. I have Hanson searching the area for a place they could've dumped it."
"Good." Henry glanced around with a slight frown. "What about Jaylyn? Is she helping him?"
"Jaylyn never showed up." Jo replied with a bit of irritation. "Lieutenant Treen called her earlier but she didn't answer, he said it went straight to voice mail."
"Do you think she's in trouble?" Evan chimed into their conversation. "What if the murderer went after her to hinder us?"
"I doubt that." Jo responded flatly, not likely the medical examiner assistant very much. "Unless someone leaked information, the killer shouldn't know about our involvement yet."
"Oh, right..." He looked at the ground sheepishly. "I knew that."
Henry glanced one last time at the crime scene around him before walking off to ride back to the morgue and start an autopsy on the girl. The ride back across the city was a bit longer than normal, as it was still early and traffic was almost at a standstill, but when he walked into the door he found Jaylyn leaning against the wall on her phone. He was slightly concerned about her fierce whispering conversation and the fact that she didn't notice them enter, but it was Jo who cleared her throat.
"Jaylyn, we have a case." She nearly glared at Jaylyn as the immortal turned around and ended the conversation with whoever had been on the other end.
"So I've been hearing." She sighed and glanced over them in observation. "A little girl was murdered with a single cut to her throat and so far no one has any leads... besides the family of course."
"That doesn't explain why you weren't at the crime scene." Jo continued to give her a stern look, which Jaylyn calmly ignored.
"I was on another assignment, something I'm not allowed to tell you guys yet." She glanced back at her phone screen as a notification ring went off. "Now if you don't mind I have to get back to it."
