It was an unorthodox Saturday for Miriam. She stood before her closet, doors wide open, looking for a decent outfit for a meeting with Michael - she didn't want to be conventional and call it a date. Most of her outfits were thrown on her bed making the room look messy. Slouched at the end of her bed, tempted to ask Michael to postpone their plans to another day, she sighed. Just as she was about to grab her phone to call him, Debora knocked on the door.
Miriam didn't change her frustrating and procrastinating disposition. She simply looked up, eyelids slightly lowered. "What ya want?"
"May I come in?" Debora asked, even though the door was left ajar.
"The door is open..." Miriam hinted to how stupid the question that Debora made was.
Debora entered the room, and noticed the mess, but kept any comments to herself. "I'm going out for a walk, do you wanna join me?" She asked.
"Nah... I have a morning program with Michael..." Miriam had just revealed a secret.
Debora was immediately excited with the news. "Shouldn't you be more excited?" She looked at Miriam sideways.
"Don't know what to wear!" Miriam pitched a fit because of that.
"Do you wanna check any of my stuff? We're not the same shape or size, but... why not try?"
This suggestion gave Miriam new energy, so she jumped off her bed and joined Debora as they walked into the bedroom next door.
"Maybe a dress." Debora suggested.
Debora's closet was rich in vibrant colors. All her clothes were neatly organized and squeezed as they were too many for that closet that was shared with Joel; the poor man didn't even occupy a tenth of the closet with all his sets of clothes.
As Miriam scanned through the clothes, she bumped into a strong color that wasn't so vibrant. She removed the hanger with the piece from the hidden corner of the closet, studying it.
"Is this a dress?" She inquired without further investigation. "Can I wear it?"
Debora had forgotten about the existence of that dress, and as soon as she saw it, she was reminded of her responsibility to share with Miriam about her story with Adam. Therefore, the sight of that dress overwhelmed her monstrously in that instant. "You can." Nervousness became her and it showed in her voice.
Miriam read Debora's tone as hesitation, and that clearly annoyed her. "Don't worry about it..." Miriam prepared to put the dress back into the closet. "I'll check some of my stuff."
"No, it's not that."
Debora tried to keep a peaceful environment; she didn't want to cheer Miriam up and then break her bubble in the worst possible way, but this was going to happen anyway.
"Then what is it?" Miriam was defiant.
"You can wear it." Debora reassured.
Miriam eyed Debora with suspicion, holding onto the dress - as if the color suited her, it didn't.
"I don't know how to tell you this."
That sentence scared Miriam all the more. "Just say it, I can take it." She lied to herself, but tried to encourage her sister-in-law.
Debora took a deep breath trying to control the strong emotions overtaking her. "You probably already know that Adam and I had a history, right?" Her face burned with nerves.
Miriam didn't know that nor how to take that information in. "I didn't know..." she mumbled.
"That dress was part of it." Debora cared to clarify.
