Grey guided me toward the dance floor. My heart hammered in my chest. Music swelled around us, slow and deliberate, a rhythm I didn't know how to follow. My fingers gripped his arm, seeking some anchor in the world that felt suddenly so foreign.
"Just stay close," he whispered. His voice was calm, low—enough to ground me without making demands.
I nodded, keeping my eyes lowered. My body felt tense, coiled like a spring. Every brush of his hand, the slightest shift in our movement, made my stomach twist. I was acutely aware of him, of me, of the way the world was watching.
We moved slowly, tentatively, around the floor. Grey's movements were sure and practiced, his hands guiding gently without force. He didn't crowd me. He didn't command me. But even the subtle closeness was overwhelming.
I forced myself to breathe, remembering the nights of my past. My father. The way he had controlled, manipulated, and hurt me. Every unwanted touch, every violation, every whispered lie in the dark. The thought of a man being near me—of any man being near me—made my chest tighten, my skin crawl.
And yet... Grey wasn't my father. He didn't make me feel like I could disappear or like I owed him obedience. His presence was quiet, measured, and protective in a way that both terrified and relieved me.
I kept my grip on his arm a little too tightly, heart racing. He noticed, but didn't comment—just allowed me to hold on, a silent acknowledgment of my fear.
The crowd blurred around me. Whispers, glances, and polite smiles made me feel like I was being examined under a microscope. Married couple. Young wife. Observed. Judged. Every eye on us amplified my anxiety.
"Relax your shoulders," he whispered gently. "Just a little."
I nodded, trying to follow the rhythm, trying to trust him. But every nerve was alert. Every memory of my father whispered at me: Don't trust him. Protect yourself. Keep away.
The dance ended far too soon for me. I barely had time
to gather my thoughts before Grey guided me off the floor. I felt exposed and raw, adrenaline coursing through my veins.
As the night started to wind down, the crowd began to thin. Grey kept a careful hold on my arm, guiding me toward the exit. The warm lights of the ballroom faded behind us, replaced by the dark night outside.
The drive was silent.
Dark streets passed by in long stretches, the only sound the low hum of the engine and Grey's occasional quiet shift behind the wheel. I kept my hands folded tightly in my lap, gripping the clutch of my purse like it could keep me tethered to something solid.
My chest was tight. My mind spun. Thoughts of my father—his twisted control, his manipulation, his abuse—haunted me. The way he had used fear as a leash, how he had made me feel small, invisible, powerless. And now, after everything I had endured, here I was... expected to share a life, a bed, with another man.
My stomach churned, my pulse racing. How could I trust? How could I allow myself to be near someone else in a way that intimate?
Grey wasn't him.
But my body remembered.
My mind remembered.
Every nerve screamed caution.
The darkness outside the car pressed against me, amplifying the tension. Shadows stretched across my hands, across my legs, across my thoughts. Every turn of the wheel made my chest tighten. Every stoplight felt like a heartbeat I couldn't catch.
