“Move out the way.” Harry, the owner of Café Casey, indicated with his head for Joey to step aside. She shook her head and instead stepped forward, taking the heavy box from his arms. “Thank you.” He grunted, depositing them in her outstretched arms. She shivered. It was definitely ice cream if the cold was anything to go buy. Harry’s arms were red with the cold.
“Sweet Jesus.” She dumped the lot in the huge freezer, rubbing her arms quickly. “It’s the middle of winter Mr Casey, do we seriously need all that ice cream?” He shoved the huge door closed and locked it. “Well, we get it for a better price now that it’s winter. We save quite some money.” He nodded and smiled at her. Joey was normally the last to leave because…well…maybe she was a bit of a butt kiss…
“Oh…well that does make sense.” She stared off into the dark, lonely shop. It wasn't cold at least, but it had the same kind of warmth you would imagine Snow White would have felt when she stumbled on the Seven Dwarves’ abandoned home. “Well, it’s best I’m off Joey.” Harry patted her shoulder with a dry smile. “You should get going as well. Would you like a lift?”
“Oh,” Joey smiled at him politely. “, No thanks Mr Casey. I walk.” The bell to the front door rang and they both turned around. No-one was supposed to come in; the sign clearly said ‘closed’. “I’m not so sure about that sweetheart.” Zayn grinned at her, stuffing his hands into his pockets.
“Sorry young man, but you aren’t allowed in here.” Harry smiled at Zayn who bent his head. “Well, my friend over here is catching a ride with me so I thought I would just pop in anyway.” Harry’s lips thinned and he threw a look at Joey who looked significantly displeased.
“Sorry Zayn, I’m catching a bus. And you aren’t allowed in.”
Zayn rolled his eyes. “Nonsense, you’re coming with me. Thanks man.” He leaned forward and gave Harry a friendly punch on the shoulder which made Harry give him a very cold, disapproving smile. Who did this boy think he was? He didn’t just barge into people’s homes, did he? So, what gave him the right to barge into a closed shop?
“I’m going to have to ask you to leave Joey, I’m sorry. I hope to see you next week please.” He couldn’t help but feel upset. “But….don’t I work Saturdays as well?” Harry shifted his eyes from the handsome foreign looking man. He gave her a pinched smile. “Take the day off. You stay later than the others anyway, so it’s alright. Now, go.”
Joey sighed and grabbed Zayn’s arm, dragging him out with her. “What the fuck was that.” She hissed, turning around to stare up at him in the cold weather. “I have this funny feeling Mr Thing in there likes you a little too much.” Zayn smiled down at here, enjoying the proximity. “And hello to you to.”
Joey growled, still staring up at him before stepping away and pulling the hood of her hoodie up. “Are you really giving me a lift?” She asked, looking at him out the corner of her eye as she searched for some lip ice in her pockets. Zayn smiled. “Mmm, yeah I am. But not to your house.” Joey smiled as she smeared the lip ice on her mouth, sending him a wink.
“I think Mr Thing over here does like me too much. Your house it is then.” She turned to face him fully, grinning before pressing her lips together. Zayn chuckled before indicating in which direction they needed to walk. He had wrapped a scarf around his neck and another one of his beanies pulled low down his forehead. Winter was the best time to be out and about because people wore so many layers and it wasn't completely uncomfortable for him to walk around with beanies and scarfs like it was in summer.
The drizzle flew into their faces when the wind changed direction. He stepped closer to her, putting a gloved arm on her elbow. “We aren’t going to my house either.” He said softly, leaning to speak into her ear. She turned, not expecting him to be so close, and their noses brushed. She felt her cheeks warm, but she didn’t pull away. “Oh? You have a thing for public places?” She smiled slowly, staring into his gorgeous golden eyes, darkened by their proximity. His pupils dilated and he pulled away. “Mmm…” he licked his lips, slightly embarrassed.
