Zayn clutched Joeys hand in his own tightly. Next to Joey stood Niall, clutching her arm just as tightly. He was crying. Joey just stared. The inside of Zayn’s cheek was bleeding he’d bitten it so hard. Louis had his hand in Harrys and his other hand on Joeys shoulder. Harry’s head was bowed and his shoulders shook. Callie and Indigo were clutching each other in a tight embrace, both fighting desperately for breath. No one was crying for the loss of Rey. Everyone cried for the loss Joey was feeling.
Liam stood shaking beside Niall. Him and Joey were the only ones standing up, staring straight ahead. Liam wasn't crying, or even remotely sad. The fury in his eyes could set fire to the white bouquet of flowers that stood before him, if he just dropped his gaze to them. His stomach roiled aggressively, his arms tensing and un-tensing. No one had really spoken yet, and there was no minister because Rey was strongly atheist.
Joey tugged her body free of the tight embrace of her new family and stepped up to the beautiful urn in which Rey’s remaining ashes lay. She shivered, but not because of the icy weather. It was all surreal, and felt like a video game. Like the beginning of Skyrim or something. Joey realised, as she pulled the lid off of the urn, that Zayn was all she had left. Zayn and the rest of One Direction.
When she pushed her hand into the urn, her eyes filled with tears. She couldn’t remember when last she’d told Rey she loved him.
They promised they’d find Hemp, but Joey didn’t even care anymore. A tear fell from her cheek and darkened a portion on the sun-warmed ash. They’d driven and flown to Scotland, and now they stood on a cliff over the sea. She’d faced flashing bulbs from paparazzi and reporters shoving microphones and recording devices near down her throat. She’d had to comfort Zayn when he’d broken down about Rey’s death, and had sat with Robin for abnormally long hours drinking high amounts of caffeinated coffee.
Joey let go a handful of dull grey ash, and watched it flurry and buffet the air with gentle kisses, floating over the greyish-blue ocean; the colour of Rey’s eyes.
Robin was dying. But so was the Joey that needed Rey more than anything. She was going to sing. She’d already bought a piano.
She turned around and faced everyone, but her eyes found Zayn’s bloodshot nervous ones. They had a lot to work out. They hadn’t spoken much to each other in the two weeks leading up to this, but Joey smiled softly for Zayn, felt her heart fill for him.
I love you, she mouthed, no one seeing it besides Zayn.
And she did. She really did.
