“I try so hard to fight it,
But it’s hopeless…”
Joey ran her fingers over the dog.
“Hopeless, so hopeless.”
Zayn watched from the safety of the kitchen. Joey seemed to be singing softly, and in all that had happened he’d forgotten how much talent she had. The concert…wow. And it was her first big concert? Not a fault, perfect down to a T. He knew she’d been practising so much but the way that she-
“If you keep staring at me so hard I’ll disintegrate.” She said softly over her shoulder, the fire flickering orange on her chin. It was the next day, but it seemed to be night it was so dark outside.
“Sorry, just thinking.” He murmured, turning back around to make himself a cup of coffee.
“About what.”
You. “The dog.”
“Oh. She’s going to be fine.”
“She?”
“Do you see a dick anywhere on her?”
“Uhm, no, I haven’t loo-”
“Yeah, well, that means it’s a girl.”
Zayn chuckled as he waited upon his coffee machine. A few whizzes later he was walking into the living room. They had indeed fallen asleep in front of the fire, and Zayn woke up to Joey being curled around the doggie’s ‘bed’ instead of him. He didn’t know whether he was upset or just cold.
“Do you want some coffee?”
“I stopped drinking coffee when I left school.” She murmured. “Coffee’s for idiots.” She turned to smirk at him before returning her eyes to the dog. The nearest twenty four hour vet was too far away to be comfortable, so the two of them would wait until Monday and hope the dogs injuries would hold on as well. Christmas didn’t speed up the opening of shops either.
“I wonder what happened.”
“It doesn’t take a genius to sum up the fact that the dog was hit by a car Zayn.” She snapped.
He threw her a look, but she was too busy staring at the dog heatedly. Focusing on her meant that the hand he was stroking the dog with veered off course and brushed over her hand. She yanked her hand away like he’d tried to burn it or something.
Zayn sighed. He didn’t know what to think. He’d calmed down significantly since he’d told Robin to fuck off, but shit still got to him. He pressed his lips together, removing his hand from the dog and curling it around his cup to stare into the fire.
What was Joey doing?! Playing games? Trying to make him jealous? It was working! She was staying with Niall all the time, visiting the hospital…Zayn scowled. She’d been staying at his house sporadically, when Niall couldn’t be there or he went out. In fact, she’d even received a key from Niall!
Zayn closed his eyes, letting the heat from the fire wash over his face and bared feet and hands.
“Well you hit me with your cold shoulder,
Whenever you look at me I wish I was her.
You shower words made of knives,
Whenever you look at me I wish I was her-er-er-er-er-er-er.”
“You don’t sing very stereotypical lullabies do you?”
“Lullabies are stupid. I sing songs I like.”
