Joey stared at the keys so long her eyes were drying out. When she blinked, enough tears filled er eyes so that some ran down her cheeks. She sighed.
She’d gone to see Rey earlier. Niall had a habit of coming with her now. He sat on Rey’s side and told him stupid jokes. For fun he’d move Rey’s mouth to answer Joey’s questions with cheesy jokes. He was a great friend, Niall was.
She spread her fingers out on the keys and pressed down on C.
He made her laugh, he cared about her.
D.
He told her jokes that weren’t funny at all.
E.
He was optimistic about near most everything.
F.
He swore a lot. He smiled a lot. He laughed a lot. And occasionally, he farted.
G.
But she wanted Zayn.
Joey hadn’t spoken to him about the kiss, or since she’d helped him with the dog.
The dog was on lockdown at the vets place. She was receiving more than one operation for her rips and her paw. They said she mightn’t regain sight in her one eye, it seemed to be mushed right back into her skull. Joey found that particular detail disturbing. It made her angry, despite the fact that the driver couldn’t help it. He/she most likely didn’t see the pup. But at least, when they had hit her, they could have stopped.
Joey sighed and got up, closing the piano and walking away from it. The man at the counter nodded at her. She smiled back and left the store and its jingling bell behind.
They hadn’t celebrated Christmas yet. They boys. Their families were coming over today and Joey had been invited. She declined. There was a limit to what she did with the boys; she would have been intruding. She didn’t want awkward greetings or hello’s or ‘How are your folks’ or stuff like that. Christmas, for Joey, was dumb.
So today she was trying to find something for Rey and herself. They bought themselves presents, and then bought each other presents. She didn’t think he’d be awake for Christmas, and because of this she was in no mood to purchase anything. Nothing appealed to her.
Ms Williamson’s offer was niggling in her mind. She sat in a coffee shop and mulled over it. Was this what she wanted? Did she want this to be what she did with her life? In the lime light? Could she handle it?
“Hello, this is Deloris of Modest! Management, how may I be of assistance?”
The answer was yes.
“Hi Deloris, could you patch me through to Ms Williamson?”

“Answer, answer, answer your phone.”
Joey groaned. What the hell was it now?
“Answer, answer, answer your phone.”
What the fuck? She read the screen of her phone twice. It was half one in the morning.
Unknown Number. Slide to answer.
Joey furrowed her brow and stuffed her phone under her pillow. Fuck off.
“Answer, answer, answer-” The phone call ended. Joey relaxed, pulling her phone out to dump it onto the table. And then it started up again.
“Answer, answer, answer your phone.”
“Oh, fuck it!” She slid to answer.
“What!” She snapped.
