Jack wiped his sweaty hands on his pants nervously as he climbed the steps leading to the World. Never in his life had Jack been so nervous for something so simple, well, actually technically it wasn't so simple. In fact, this was gonna be one of the hardest things to over come for Jack. He already knew what Katherine's answer would be, they'd discussed the matter many times before. The only problem was Pulitzer's answer, would he actually give Jack a chance or would he kick him to the curb without a thought? Deep down he knew it didn't matter what Pulitzer said, he was still gonna marry her anyway but something deep down inside him wanted to do it right. As Pulitzer's secretary Hanna told him it was alright to go in Jack felt the familiar clutches of panic curling around his throat. It was either gonna work out just fine or Jack would end up having to spill the news to Katherine and believe him, he did not want to do that. Jack knocked on the huge wooden doors that towered above his head. When no one answered Jack let himself in, instantly he recognized the big oaken desk and the posh fireplace nestled in the corner. It smelled slightly of cigarette smoke mixed with after shave, sitting at the big desk was none other than Joseph Pulitzer. He seemed to be completely engrossed in a pile of documents in front of him and didn't notice when the doors shut behind Jack. There was a few seconds of thence silence before Jack cleared his throat loudly.
Pulitzer looked up from his papers his old face etched with confusion, as his eyes landed on Jack his expression changed from confusion to dislike to suspicion in a mater of a second.
"Kelly? What are you doing?"
Jack glanced around the room asking himself the same question in his mind, he had to focus really hard on Katherine's face to remember why he was even there.
"I'se need ta speak with you." He said grateful his voice didn't sound as nervous as he felt.
"Really?" Pulitzer asked dryly and shifted his gaze back to the papers on his desk.
"Yea... it's about me and Katherine." Jack said shoving his hands in his pockets.
"You mean 'Katherine and I'?" Pulitzer asked dipping his quill into a bottle of ink.
"Huh?"
"The proper English way to say that sentence is 'Katherine and I' Do you understand?" He asked checking something off on the paper.
Jack blinked at the man suddenly feeling a bit stupid, he hadn't even been there three minutes and already Pulitzer was judging him. He wanted to get angry but forced himself to stay calm.
"Are we's just gonna stand here while you correct my grammar or can I actually say what I came here for?" Jack asked his voice as calm as the eye of a hurricane. Pulitzer glanced back up at him his glasses flashing in the light.
"Very well. Sit." He instructed motioning to the plush chairs across from his massive desk. Jack slowly made his way to the seat and sat down feeling extremely tense. "Speak." Pulitzer said looking back down at his desk. Jack clutched the arm rests of the chairs and took a deep breath.
"As ya probably know, me and Kath have been real close these past few years." Jack said thinking back to the first time he had met her. "And I care about her a lot sir and want to be with her."
"Aren't you already together? Or are you young people calling public displays of affection something else these days?" He asked thumbing through a stack of papers.
"Er-no, that's not what I mean. We's are together, but I would like ta be with her for... forever." Jack said holding his breath.
Finally Pulitzer looked up from his work his bored expression suddenly becoming cold and suspicious.
