When she looked into Sebastian's eyes, dark and hateful, a tingle ran down her spine. One of fear. This was not the boy she knew anymore, the boy who pursued knowledge just for fun. No, this was a devil who didn't care how many times he had to use her for his own gain. He had found her no matter how far she had run, not Sebastian, no, but the thing that lived in him now: the hatred and thirst for vengeance. She had once again lost someone to it and it was becoming sickening how many times she'd seen this story play out. Another family member lying dead because of hate. First it was Lodgok, and now it was Solomon.
It wasn't like she didn't understand. Once or twice she had almost given into it, drowning in the bitterness and pain leaving oceans of blood in her wake. She'd almost killed Rookwood, she'd killed so many goblins and wizards. She almost went and hunted them in vengeance after Fig's death, in fact she did.
And even once she almost had killed Sebastian- just now.
But she didn't. She wouldn't let it win. She was still on fire for what was right, or so she hoped.
"At least I'm pretty sure."
~~
When she looked into the devil's eyes before, it wasn't as tempting. Because when she looked away she saw him, the one that made her smile wide, who chased the darkness far away. He had found her in it, he had found her and not run. For he was also there, her adversary in a good way. He was always opposed to acting rashly, and drew her back from the edge.
He had drawn them both back from the edge more than once. He always found them, always knew, and always had the sharp cutting yet honestly soft words to make her see clearly. Ominis was the only one who could truly understand. The drag paths they left behind were so similar that they could easily follow them into each other, as if they were one.
"You found me."
A legacy and power neither of them wanted. Bearing despised existences, having a cage and a rulebook they were meant to follow, yet they carved out their own paths - ones of pain, of struggles, of sadness and many nights alone like a forgotten sack lying on the side of the road.
Both of them had wondered if there was someone out there who would find them someday and love them for who they truly were and not who they had been made into.
Can you find me?
~~
Ominis ran his hand over the carved path in the rocks, as if someone had been dragged away.
Her magic signature was weak but it was here.
Sebastian had said she was gone but there was evidence here.
She knew he would find her; he could always find her, and he would.
If he knew how to unravel her, he could unravel the threads she left behind.
Her drag path.
"I will find you," he said, letting the sticky pebbles trickle through his long fingers, as tears trickled down his face at the smell of iron the earth carried. "I promise you."
~~
It was hazy, her head throbbed, her throat burned as she curled into a ball of pain once again.
She could no longer scream, no matter how her nerves shrieked as they were stabbed, pinched, and ripped into by scalding strands of red lightning that tore through her body over and over.
The tears sizzled on her cheeks and all she could think about was Ominis- that he would hurry up and find her, that somehow he could make this end, even to just hold her one last time.
