"Izzy, what took you so long?" Leila asked when I had caught up with her on her way to the wolf den. "Surely buying presents doesn't take that long."

"Yes, but people buying gifts usually don't chase birds and get lost when they're done." I shrugged.

"What kind of bird?" Leila asked, taking out her phone to pull up a picture.

"A Resplendent Quetzal." I replied as we entered the den. Leila paused as she looked at a picture on her phone.

"These birds are beautiful..." She muttered.

"I know. That's why I chased it." Willa and Wynter were there, waiting for us in blue and yellow dresses (respectively) and matching heels.

"Leila!" Wynter exclaimed. "Happy birthday! We've been planning this party for months!"

My head whipped around to face Leila and I gawked at her incredulously. "They knew your birthdate before me? I am wounded, Leila."

"Sorry..." Leila's cheeks turned pink in embarrassment. "I meant to tell you sooner, but I didn't have the chance."

I smiled. "It's okay, Leila. I forgive you." I gave her a hug. "Now, what do you wanna do first, Birthday Girl?"

Leila grinned back at me. "First, we're gonna turn you into a preppy, slay, opposite-of-you kind of gurlie." It was at this moment that I realized: Leila's idea of a good birthday party is synonymous with my torture.

(no particular POV)

"She looks like a potato."

"Leo, you can't say that!"

"Oh, yeah?

Why not?"

"Because she's your baby sister!

Also, it's extremely rude, ya know."

"It doesn't even matter.

It's not like she can hear me."

"But what if she can?"

"Even if she can hear me, she still can't understand me."

"But what if she can?"

"Are you daft?

Of course she can't, Ellie!

She's a baby!"

"We are literally freaks of nature, Leo.

Is it truly a stretch to think that she can understand us?"

"Yes!

Just because we're freaks,

Doesn't mean we aren't restricted by human limitations."

"Whatever.

Maybe you should focus more on finding 'x'

And less on coming after me."

"Keep my school grades out of this!"

"I will when you apologize to Izylia for calling her a potato."

"Ugh, fine.

Sorry, Izylia."

"Like you mean it!"
