Title: God Meets Us in Burnout
Today I want to talk about something almost everyone knows personally, even if we don't always name it: "burnout".
Burnout isn't just being tired. It's that deep exhaustion where rest doesn't seem to work anymore. It's when your motivation disappears, your patience runs thin, and even the things you care about start to feel heavy. It's when you keep showing up, but something inside you feels empty.
Burnout doesn't care how old you are.
Students feel it. Parents feel it. Caregivers feel it. Workers, leaders, volunteers, retirees, burnout finds us all.
And here's the important thing to say out loud in a place of faith:
Burnout is not a failure of faith. It is not a sign that you don't trust God enough. It is not proof that you're weak or broken. If anything, burnout often comes from caring deeply for too long without enough support.
1. Even God's People Get Burned Out
• Scripture is full of people who reached their limits.
• Elijah, one of the greatest prophets, once sat down under a tree and said, "God, I've had enough."
• David cried out in the Psalms about feeling overwhelmed and crushed.
• Even Jesus withdrew to lonely places to rest.
Let that sink in.
Jesus rested.
Jesus stepped away.
Jesus said "no" to crowds sometimes.
So why do we think we're supposed to run endlessly?
2. What Burnout Tells Us?
Burnout is often a signal, not a sin.
It tells us:
* You've been giving more than you've been receiving
* You've been strong for too long
* You've confused your worth with your productivity
* You've forgotten that you are human, not infinite
God never asked us to be machines.
God created limits on purpose.
REST was so important that it became a commandment.
Not a suggestion.
Not a reward for finishing everything.
A command.
3. God Is Not Waiting for You to Collapse
Here's a lie many of us carry: "I'll rest after I finish everything."
But there will always be more to do.
God doesn't stand over us with a stopwatch, measuring our output. God meets us in our exhaustion, not after we've powered through it.
Psalm 34 says, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted."
Not the efficient. Not the unstoppable. The tired. The worn down. The burned out.
4. An Invitation, Not a Demand
Jesus says, "Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
Notice what He doesn't say:
"Fix yourself first"
"Push a little harder"
"Earn your rest"
He says, "come".
Burnout doesn't disqualify you from God.
It's often the very place God is trying to reach you.
5. What Rest Can Look Like
Rest isn't always a nap or a vacation. Sometimes it's:
* Asking for help
* Letting something go unfinished
* Saying no without guilt
* Being honest instead of strong
* Trusting that God can hold what you release
Rest is an act of faith.
It says, "God, the world doesn't fall apart when I stop."
***
If you're burned out today, hear this clearly:
You are not lazy.
You are not weak.
You are not disappointing God.
You are human and deeply loved.
May we be a people who take rest seriously, who care for one another, and who believe that God works not only through our effort, but through our stillness.
Amen.
