Nia couldn't help but sigh as she walked into Al's Dive Bar, her get away from the superhero life, even though the bar was alien central in National, but she needed the break, since she didn't know how Kara handled being National City's title superhero, but with Kara and Lena off on their honeymoon and leaving strict orders not to be disturbed unless the world was ending, the job of being National City's protector had fallen to Nia, which was Dreamer's chance to step up and maybe even earn a seat on the Watchtower. And it was exhausting, especially for someone who's powers relied on dreams. She envied Kara's super speed and super hearing, since it meant that she could just stay home at night.
But Nia wasn't just here to relax and recenter herself, she was also meeting an informant who said they had a hot story for her and wanted to meet her here. And since Nia was known to frequent this bar, and considering all the aliens in it, no one would think twice about their meeting.
"You look like you could use this. On the house." Al said as he handed Nia a Sakarran Ale.
"Thanks. Rough week." Nia said as she rubbed her sore back. Well, nearly every part of her body was sore actually.
"Sure looks like it." Al said, as someone sat down next to her.
"Thanks for coming, Nia." the alien man said.
"You said you had a big story for me Mike. What is it?" NIa asked, neither of them looking at each other.
"An illegal alien fight club here in National City." Mike said.
"You have my attention, but do you have proof, since I can't print anything based on your word." Nia said as Mike slid a folder over to her.
"How's this for proof? I've been there and seen the fights. Only issue is that they relocate after every event." Mike said as Nia looked over the blurry photos, but she could make out enough to confirm Mike's story.
"Can you get me a location?" Nia asked.
"I'll let you know when I hear about it. But if you're going to attend, you should probably go shopping." Mike said.
"Why?" Nia asked.
"Because if you go looking like that, they'll know you don't belong. This place caters to an extremely high profile clientele. As in the rich. I think the only rich people in this city who've never attended are Kara and Lena Danvers and Cat Grant." Mike said.
"Thanks for the tip. I'll see what I can dig up on this. But I think I just found my next story." Nia said as she grabbed all the documents and walked out of the bar after finishing her drink, neither of them aware that they'd been overheard.
The next morning, Nia was watching the news as she and Brainy ate breakfast before she left for work and Brainy left to drop Sasha off at school before heading to work at the DEO, since she and Brainy lived together and Sasha lived in their spare bedroom.
Anyways, Nia's attention was drawn to the story.
"This just in, police have just found the body of one Michael Shawnis." the reporter said and Nia was stunned when she saw it was Mike.
"Nia, are you okay?" Brainy asked his girlfriend.
She swallowed hard. "Brainy... that's my source. Mike. The one for the alien fight club story I told you about when I got home last night." Her voice cracked. "Someone working for the club must've followed him and—"
She couldn't finish.
Brainy set down his fork, expression sharpening with protective calculation. "Nia, you are not responsible for his death."
"I sent him home alone," she whispered. "I should've— I don't know. Walked him out. Warned him more. Something."
"You acted as any journalist would," Brainy said gently. "The individuals running this fight club are the ones at fault."
"Still, they know who I am too. I'm gonna call Sasha's school, tell them that she's out sick and then I want you to keep her safe either at the DEO or the Island until I get the club shut down. Mom and dad trusted me to take care of Sasha while she's here in National City and I'm not going to let her get hurt because of me." Nia said and Brainy nodded, knowing better than to talk her out of it.
"And while you're at the DEO, please see if you can scour the dark web for any trace of where this fight club is meeting next and also hack me an invite for it." Nia said.
"I've been working on that since you told me about your story last night, but unfortunately, I am limited to 21st century internet speeds and these people are very good at covering their tracks. But I will get you that information." Brainy assured her.
"Thank you. And thank god Kara left me her credit card while she was gone because I need to go shopping at one of those high end stores she likely has a shopper at to get an outfit I could wear to this event, so I'll be home late tonight." Nia said as she kissed Brainy's cheek before rushing out the door and pulling out her phone to call Sasha's school.
