CHAPTER TEN
DET. MORRIS
Jerry drove as we made our way to the penitentiary for an interview before moving onto the hunt for Aiden August. Jerry said he would come with me on the hunt, as long as i went to this interview with him. I wasn't particularly keen on seeing this inmate, but Jerry was supporting me, so i supported him. I sat in the passenger seat wondering about what Marian might be doing right now and puffing on a cigarette. I had grabbed some of my belongings while Marian was out, leaving her our lawyers number to arrange some paperwork to file for divorce.
'Morris, you've got to talk to Marian at some point. She keeps calling, worried about you.' he must have known i was thinking about her.
'Come on Jerry, please don't make me talk about her.' He exhaled with defeat and drove into the prisons car park. We took a moment to breathe and calm ourselves in the car, then continued on into a caged room with an old battered table thats aluminium shine had dulled to a sad grey. There were two stools that were bolted down on each side of the table and Jerry sat down, gesturing for me to sit next to him. The seat was hard and uncomfortable but everything went numb when August walked in.The guards pushing him around and having to handcuff him to the table didn't stop him from his face expression; he looked down on me with superiority and a small smirk hit the corners of his mouth, making my body quiver.
'Jerry, Frieda.' he was so calm and collected. He remembered my name.
'Benjamin we're here to ask you some questions about your son.' Jerry was straight into the questions, and when he said Aiden's name, August's face lit up.
'My boy! has to be 26 this year, right?' he gleamed with joy.
'Next year.' i corrected, making his face drop and stare into my eyes. i felt so small in his presence, why did i say that?
'When was the last time you spoke to your son?' Jerry had taken his attention from me, relieving me from his gaze.
'i received a letter from him just over a month ago, or am i wrong about that to?' he didn't even look at me that time but i knew he wanted to scream his hate for me in my face.
'What was the subject of the letter, Benjamin?'
'He was mentioning something about his last holiday trip with his lovely young wife.'
'Anything else?'
A smirk grew onto his face devilishly. 'Nope. why are you asking about him anyway?'
'Your son is on the run after a series of bodies were found on his property.'
his smirk had turned into a full blown, glowing smile.
'My boy! He is finally a corrector! The stars have come into place, and my boy is a god, just like his father!' His frantic yells had caught the attention of the guards who came over to calm August down, but to no avail.
'The corrector will cleanse you, and you will be thankful for his blessings for he is a god, A GOD!' he screamed as the guards struggled with him and dragged him away to go back to his cell. It was only then that i had realised i was holding my breath, and i exhaled heavily making me feel sick.
The visit felt almost useless, but Jerry stopped into an office and talked to one of the officers for a while then proceeding to come out with a handful of letters.i read the letters on the drive to the next town. The very first letter was surprising.
Father
By now you have been locked up for a year. Things aren't too well here. Mother has passed away, and Mark has gone back to the commune. I'm alone and i feel lost. If you were here you would read the bible to me and tell me what to do, however i cant find the bible, and you are not here.
I would go back to the commune but their is someone pulling me back. She is beautiful, Father. Her name is Jo and she seems so pure. I cant tell her my feelings yet because she is still young, and nobody in this town would understand love like we do.
I pray for you a lot and i hope you get the chance to pray at nine every night, like we used too.
Love, Aiden. Most of the letters then after were vague and just kept him up with what Aiden was doing with his life. There were a few mentions of a commune, however and i felt that could be a lead.
Jerry agreed and we stopped into the next towns precinct and photocopied the letters, sending them to the captain. This precinct was bigger than ours and boasted a high ceiling with hanging lights, and the kitchen was amazing. The granite counter tops matched the black counters and cabinets perfectly and they had a real coffee maker, rather than a kettle and freeze dried stuff back at our precinct. I melted in delight from the sheer taste of the coffee and comfortable surroundings. Jerry walked in and smiled, pouring himself a cup as well.
'The captain has approved us to look into the commune lead.'
'Now to find out where it actually is, i know its in the country somewhere so were on the right track going south east.'
Jerry nodded and we drank our coffees in perfect silence.
The drive was going to take a few days at least before we reached any country side so i bought a few packets of cigarettes for the long drive. Jerry didn't mind me smoking in the car, as he smoked twice as much as i did, which was a lot lately.
I made myself comfortable in the car and checked my phone. seventeen missed calls. I sighed and switched it off, i decided that all my attention would now go onto the case; i would stop at nothing to close it and make sure none of this would happen again so that my life could feel stable again. I needed stability, craved it.
