"I'm exhausted," Emberleaf complained to Brightlight as they headed towards the apprentices' den to wake Leafpaw. "I don't want to be a mentor today." She yawned widely, for about the hundredth time today.
"I know how you feel," Brightlight admitted, glancing at her former apprentice. "Good thing Redclaw is basically a full-time medicine cat right now. Another good thing is that there have been no fighting or many injuries lately. Saves me a lot of time to organize my herbs."
"Lucky." Emberleaf yawned, once again. She entered the apprentices' den with Brightlight at her flank to see Leafpaw all washed up and ready, not a fur out of place.
"Hey," Leafpaw greeted timidly. Seeing her apprentice, Emberleaf was reminded of the past day, when she was watching Leafpaw and Graypaw "fight", which reminded her of those days...
No. She couldn't think about it. It had already brought her too much depression. She didn't need any more.
But it was too late. The next thing Emberleaf knew, she was plunged into a swirl of memories.
It was a newleaf morning. The dew soaked Emberpaw's paws as she headed towards the training hollow, on Foxpaw's heels, with all the other apprentices following them. The sun shone strongly onto the training hollow's sandy ground, a light breeze swirling through Emberpaw's fur.
"I can't believe our mentors are letting us play!" Emberpaw squealed, quickly trotting up to Foxpaw's side.
"I know!" Foxpaw meowed happily, glancing at Emberpaw with his gorgeous green eyes. "This is going to be so much fun!"
"This is a one-time thing," Hazelpaw said, "so let's make the best of it!!!!!!!!!" She hopped into the training hollow, sending a spray of sand in Darkpaw's direction.
"Hey! Not cool!" Darkpaw growled playfully, sending some sand at Hazelpaw.
Emberpaw watched their sand fight, purring in amusement once in a while when one of them would get sand in their mouth.
Suddenly, she was pinned onto the ground, a familiar scent wreathing around her.
Foxpaw.
"Get off me!" Emberpaw squealed, pummelling her friend with her hind legs.
"Make me!" Foxpaw challenged.
"Oh you're on!" Emberpaw thrust her hind paws onto Foxpaw's belly, her claws sheathed so that she wouldn't draw blood. After some struggling, she was finally let go of.
"Hah!" Emberpaw yelled playfully.
"I went easy on you!" Foxpaw claimed.
"Mmmmhhhmmm," Emberpaw drawled out sarcastically.
"Yes, for real! I'm serio-"
Emberpaw jumped onto Foxpaw's back, making him collapse onto the ground. She planted her paws on his shoulders to keep him from getting up.
Foxpaw purred in amusement. "Good one! But you're obviously hopeless against me...!" With one heave of his body, he pushed Emberpaw off him, making her roll away from him.
This play-fighting lasted for about the whole day, from morning to sunset. It was by far the best day of Emberpaw's life for two reasons.
One, play fighting was always fun for her. And probably to many other apprentices too.
Two, that was the day she realized she had fallen for Foxpaw, who, later, would soon become Foxclaw.

A/N: Sorry about it's shortness! But this chapter was needed, and this seemed like a good place to stop at. The next chapter will probably be in Emberleaf's point of view too.
So what do you think about Emberleaf now that you know about her liking for Foxclaw? :)
