October, 1945

It's been 2 months without her, and the house is always so quiet.

Her mom just recently began eating again and that makes me happy because it looked like if she was the one that died.

I don't like people seeing me cry, so I only cry in the shower and in my room and night. Just remembering that I can never hear her tell me the new gossip she had learned or me telling her how my day was.

I never take my bracelet off, just like how she told me to.

It was hard having to pass by her room and now she wasn't going to stick her head out and call my name out so we gossip inside her room.

The tears are here again, and it's not because of the onion I'm cutting for lunch.

"Come back, Laurie." I wipe the tears off with the back of my hand.

I hear a knock at the door and make my way to open it, drying my face as I make my way to the door.

As soon as I open the door I see a middle aged man, and he hands me a paper. I thank him and close the door as I enter the house.

We were promised a wife for our son,

Bla bla bla bla bla

I skip ahead and go to the end.

If you cannot full-fill what was promised, we must ask back ALL of our lands back and money that you have 'borrowed' from us.

"Thank you for understanding, Richard Walker." I read in a whisper.

"Lina? What is that?" I hear Mr. Reynolds voice.

I hand him the paper, and his eyes widen. "I- I.. Rose!" He screams and soon Mrs. Reynolds runs down the stairs.

"Yes, honey?" She looks worried, and her eyes are swollen. She cries non-stop every day. I've actually gotten used to seing her eyes like that.

"They- They want everything back. We- we don't have enough. It cost us a lot to bury Laurie where we did. We payed for all of her things with the money they gave us. Now they want it back." He was red.

She grabs the note and begins reading it. "Wait, it says here that we didn't give them a wife. Let's just wed Andrea." Her voice barely audible.

"Andrea? The minute I mention the idea to her, she will most probably hang up on me. The disrespectful little thing." Mr. Reynolds scowls.

"I'll call her." She heads out.

"I'm sorry for everything Lina, I don't want to worry you." He apologizes and I can't say anything. I don't know what to. I've always said that I would like to repay them in some way, and maybe this would help them, so Laurie can stay in that fancy cemetery and rest in peace.

"You helped me when I was in a bad place, so.. I will help you." When the words come out of my mouth, I doubt them but I don't take it back.

"Wh- what?" He Asked, he probably doesn't believe someone would want to give themselves up to help others.

"If you need me to marry those hateful's people son, and that will help you, i'll do it." I say, a bit more confident this time.

"Lina, I- I don't want to be rude, but Richard is an asshole, and he wouldn't let his son marry.." He holds himself back from saying it.

"Say it." I say, no tone of joke in my voice.

"A maid," He looks at the ground, ashamed of calling me that.
