"Take a seat over there Miss White."
I'd just walked into detention and handed my slip of paper over to the teacher overseeing the room, but he barely looked up from the book he was reading. I was surprised he even knew it was me he was talking to, but maybe he'd just spied my name on the pink paper.
I nodded and went to sit in the far corner of the room, as far away from the other two students in the room as I could. I recognised one of them to be Jake's friend, I think his name was Erik, but we'd barely spoken five words together so I wasn't surprised when he didn't acknowledge me.
Maybe he'd spoken to Jake and that was why he was currently giving me the side eye from across the room, he was probably still pissed at me.
I made a point to ignore him as I opened my bag and got my book out, at least we were allowed to do whatever we wanted in this detention. Not like other schools where they genuinely made you write lines of what you've done wrong.
"There will be no talking in the next hour," the teacher whose name I didn't know piped up from the front of the class. "Anyone found talking, eating or otherwise doing something that isn't educational will get another detention tomorrow and so on until you learn the lesson."
Everyone remained silent as instructed and I sighed as I got comfy in the chair.
My wings were killing me, demanding to be released, but there was little I could do if I didn't want to be trapped here tomorrow again. I just had to suck it up and get over it. I'd dealt with this before, this feeling wasn't new, I could do it again easily.
The clock slowly dragged on, the ticking of the second hand sounding so loud in the quiet of the room.
I forced my eyes to stay on the pages of my book, trying to read the words as I struggled to follow along with the story, but it wasn't long before I started to feel my eyes start to drift closed.
My head lolled to the side, my eyes closing as sleep threatened to take over me, but I managed to catch myself before I fell off the chair.
I must've really stressed myself out last night with my paranoia if I was still tired. Maybe the quality of my sleep wasn't enough or something.
"Who the hell is eating in here?" The teacher suddenly piped up from the desk at the front of the class.
The room stayed silent, the three of us looking at each other wide eyed as we tried to figure out who the culprit was.
"I can smell sugar, don't deny it," he warned, leaving over the desk as he looked at each of us in turn.
I took a small sniff, trying to figure out who thought it was a good idea to try and sneak food past the teacher and he was right, there was a
faint lingering of sweetness in the air which screamed of sugar.
Idiots.
My eyes traveled the room, looking at the two guys who were also in detention on me, before settling on Erik.
Of course it would be him that tried something like this. It was something Jake would definitely try and do so of course his friend would be the same.
I caught is eye, smirking slightly to tell him I knew it was him, but looked away before he could do anything to give us away. I really didn't need another days detention because of something one of Jake's idiot friends did.
"If I catch anyone chewing, you'll be spending the rest of your senior year in this room," the teacher warned before sitting back in his seat.
"There are five minutes left, I'm sure you can all restrain yourself for such a short amount of time so we can all get out of here happy."
