chapter 17

Time slowed down as the cougar leapt at me, then quick as lightning I saw a giant shadow knock the cougar right out of the air and bring it crashing to the ground. A loud blood curdling roar broke my shock, causing time to speed up to normal again. Another animal was now battling the cougar, purposely keeping itself between the cougar and I.

Sakina’s POV

I watched in horror as the cougar went after Toby. I began to see red and automatically charged at the animal trying to harm my human.

I leapt at the cougar as it leapt at Toby knocking it out of the air and away from him. The cougar was not happy. It began to swipe at me. In the back of my mind I regretted deciding to change to a smaller size. I knew I could win in the fight but the odds were slightly more even now.

This animal seemed to want nothing to do with me. All it wanted was to get to Toby. That made me furious, screaming like a reptilian banshee I raked my talons across the cats face and as its head snapped to the side I lunged and sank my teeth into its jugular, biting down hard. The animal produced a whining, dying sound, still looking in Toby’s direction then went limp. I dropped it, pausing for a moment, and then looking over my shoulder at Toby.

He looked back at me in terror. I knew this would happen when he saw me fight, I could taste the cougars blood in my mouth which probably meant that it was all over my face. I turned my head, ashamed about what I might have done to him. I gaze burned into the fatal wound in the cougars neck as I scolded myself. I heard him wimper ever so quietly, but just that one little noise sent a shockwave of anger into me.

‘How could I do that to him? Hes seen so much in his short life already! He doesn’t need to see any more destruction and killing! Especially by me! How could I be so stup-‘

Toby’s POV

I couldn’t even think straight a jumble of emotions, half thoughts, and questions ran throught my head. Relief ‘I thought id lost you’, fear ‘that thing tried to kill me’, doubt ‘is it really you?’ … but despite my thoughts I couldn’t change my facial expression from anything but terror. When the animal finally was dead she turned to look at me. I couldn’t read her expression until she looked away. I tried to speak to ask her if she was hurt, but what came out of my mouth was a quiet whimper. I hoped she hadn’t heard the pathetic noise but in the split second it took for me to make the sound her whole body went tense.

She started to shake violently, her gaze still fixed on the cougar. All of a sudden she snarled and swatted the cougar, like how a cat might swat a cat toy, sending this 300 pound animal flying through the air like it was a weightless ragdoll. The sudden movement shocked me out of my confusion and I could feel my heart beating again. Then before I could say anything she was sprinting away from me as fast as a cheetah at top speed and in an instant she was gone. In fear id lose her again I shouted

“sakina!”

3 second went by, then I watched her explode out of the trees coming straight at me. My heart went into overdrive as I tried to scramble back from her. She stopped about a metre from me and roared in a way that made my blood freeze, I was momentarily reminded of when I was a little boy watching Jurrasic Park with my brother, and hiding under the covers when the t- rex was roaring and trying to kill people. But this was worse. This sound made my skin crawl and made me realize that even if I could move, there was no hope of escaping her. If she wanted to kill me I was dead. All these thoughts rushed through my brain as fast as lightning as I sat there trembling, unable to look away from her rows of dagger point teeth a mere 2 feet away from my face.

When she stopped roaring, she started snarling taking steps towards me. Her lips pulled as far away from her teeth that put sharks to shame. I trembled as she stood over me leaning in close, her hypnotic eyes fixed on mine as her pupils shrank to slits so small I almost couldn’t see them. As I let out my breath, I spoke her name. then I waited for the sharp pain of fangs to bite into me one last time.
