chapter 19

My eyes flew back open and my body instinctively tensed for an attack, instantly focusing on the source of the sound.

Usually Jacobs presence would calm me down but right at the moment, he had the opposite effect.

Toby’s eyes opened as well and I could see a questioning look on his face through my peripheral vision. I assume that he didn’t hear Jake since he jumped slightly when he finally turned around and saw the giant wolf bark-laughing at our discomfort. The tan of his cheeks gained a touch of rose as he realised that Jacob was laughing at us.

“Jake,” I growled, “what are you doing here?” pushing some ferocity into my tone, I was never one who enjoyed being laughed at, no matter who was doing the laughing.

‘I was hunting’ Jacob snorted as he caught my tone and tried to control himself. ‘do you realise what time it is?’

My eyebrows pulled together as I looked up at the sky. It was definitely late afternoon, 6 or 7:00 maybe. I wondered what the hell had taken so long, we didn’t leave late, and all the other events probably only took a few minutes. That’s odd.

“I didn’t until now” I said, still confused.

“didn’t know what?” Toby asked, looking at me in a weird way

“how late it is” I said ignoring his facial expression.

He glanced up, squinting at the sky “it does look darker” he said. “maybe we should head back”

“why? Are you afraid of the dark?” I teased, smiling playfully and using a lighter tone

“no!” he spoke with pretend insult, then his tone became serious “just whats in it” he said in a softer tone.

The mood changed instantly. Jacob, feeling the change but looking confused stared at me blankly. Wondering out pushing his curiosity into my thoughts. I ignored them, as much as I wanted to tell him, I couldn’t, it wasn’t mine to share.

“come on” I tried to lighten the mood “lets go, before the zombies and ghosts come for us”

I shot Toby what I hoped was a reassuring smile. He just smiled back.

Jacob, still confused, told me that he was going to continue to hunt since he hadn’t caught anything yet. I nodded and he darted into the trees. And Toby and I began to make our way back to the house.

Toby’s P.O.V.

I couldn’t help the slight fear that crept into my stomach as I grew very aware that the sun was getting closer to the ground. I used to love being out at night. Now it just scares me.

 I know that vampires aren’t supposed to be able to go into the sunlight, but I never did find out how that one had, still, I definitely trust the sun more than I trust the moon.

Sakina and I were walking at a good pace, but even though I had to try to not trip on stray roots and holes, I couldn’t help glancing at her.

Each time my eyes flicked towards her my brain got a new shock of how beautiful and graceful she was. Even her features were graceful, every line of her was perfect.

Soon I couldn’t take my eyes away from her, giving me a change to showcase my gracefulness by tripping over an outstanding root, stumbling a few steps, then catching myself on a tree.

“ooghf” I felt the utter embarrassment more than the impact (witch didn’t hurt) and I prayed that she wouldn’t notice.

‘What the hell is wrong with me!?’ I wondered to myself ‘I’m never this clumsy, and why does it always need to be when I’m with her?’. As I glanced up to see if she had seen the fall, my heart jumped as I met her green eyes.

“Are you injured?” she asked,  sounding concerned

“No” I said hurriedly pushing myself away from the tree and standing tall as I felt my face heat up.

When she didn’t say anything I looked down at her and noticed she was smiling, and my lips involuntarily turned up

“What?” I asked playfully. And she turned her face to me, confused “what?” she asked

“Why are you smiling?” I clarified. She just smiled and looked down,  

“Those roots just come out of nowhere huh?” she said mockingly and looked back up at me, I laughed and agreed as we continued walking.

Sakinas P.O.V.

“those roots just come out of nowhere huh?” I joked with him hoping he would see my humor.

“yeah your right” he said as he laughed at what I hoped was my comment.

I smiled at him as his laughter turned into a smile, he really did look embarrassed when he tripped, I thought it was cute. Like when a puppy falls over while trying to get a chew toy. Except that puppy is tall, and handsome.

I noticed him glancing at me while we were walking and It took a lot of my will power to not meet his gaze, instead I thought about his features from my memory.

I thought about his strong jaw, his young face, that looked like it could be anywhere between 16 or 25 years old in human years. His build which was noticeable through his shirt, and his deep ocean grey eyes. I was glad he wasn’t a supernatural, since he would’ve heard my heart rate pick up as my thoughts continued to focus on him.

I jumped as something grabbed onto my hand and began to shock me. Recognising the electricity but still not sure what was happening I glanced down at my hand and saw a large calloused, darker coloured hand consuming mine and keeping a firm grip. I had another mental war as my thoughts immediately went into escape/ attack mode and my hormones wanted me to just fall into the person the hand was connected to.

So, while continuing to walk, I stared down at our hands not sure what to do but definitely not wanting t let go of the hand. I raised my gaze to the human beside me that was also staring at me with a hopeful and worried expression morphing his features. His grey eyes even more profound than in my thoughts. My heart jumped in my chest and I got that weird fuzzy feeling in my stomach again and I decided to let my hormones have their way.

I smiled up at him and the expression that contorted his face changed to one of pure happiness, breaking into a smile.  I parted my lips to return his toothy smile and looked ahead again, letting the warm feeling spread from my stomach to the rest of my body. Allowing my thoughts to wander to him again as we kept walking through the trees.
