“Are you sure that you heard someone else’s thoughts then?” I asked urgently, seriously hoping that I wasn’t his first read.
“Have you not been listening at all?” Drake asked, annoyed “I’ve told you I don’t know!”
I could hear the frustration in his voice, but I was too worried about our safety to care. Artemis left a while ago after giving up on narrowing down a significant diagnosis. Though I couldn’t help but feel like he was hiding something, which usually meant that he was.
Currently Drake and I were sitting in the living room; the T.V. was on, but for no reason. Nobody really ever bothered to watch it other than when the news is on, and even then it’s a rare occasion. Artemis was in his room doing god knows what. Though I think he did mumble something about searching up symptoms or possibilities on the internet.
I looked up at Drake with the intention of an apology. But when I noticed his annoyed and condescending expression aimed at me, the want to console him left me quite abruptly for some reason, so instead I glared back.
“Well excuse me for wanting to know what the hell is wrong with you!” I snapped “if you didn’t know this already, monsters shield their thoughts and mental waves so that it’s harder for other more powerful ones to come, find, and attack them. So having you waltz in here with your unnatural abilities shooting brain waves in every direction isn’t really a ray of sunshine Drake!”
I stood up and started walking away, and then all of a sudden a familiar chest was in my face. And the arms attached to that chest grabbed me by the shoulders and sat me back down on the couch. The dull tingles that traced their way up and down my arms made me almost want to stay in Drakes not-so-friendly embrace… almost.
He pushed my shoulders into the couch and moved his firm grip to my elbows. Placing his shin over my thighs to make sure I wouldn’t kick him.
“Let me up you jerk!” I yelled in his face, I had never been in this position before and I never wanted to be again. It was humiliating, I felt so vulnerable and weak. Why the hell couldn’t I get up!?
“You’re such a pain in my ass! Let me go you half bred son of a…jackal…” the last words trailed out of my mouth quietly, and I stopped struggling as I realised a few things. I can’t get up because Drake is holding me down, I’m one of the most powerful monsters there is… and a human is holding me down easily… a human that can read my mind… and sneak up on me…something’s not right …oh crap.
These thoughts clicked by in my head and for some reason all I could think was ‘Artemis doesn’t need the computer anymore’
I looked up into Drakes eyes and, sure enough, the dark blue I’m so accustomed to was now a light blue with thousands of tiny amber- yellow specks and lines. They were beautiful, I didn’t want to look away, but I’d spent enough time in front of the mirror staring at my own eyes when they were like that to know how to force myself to look away. I slowly moved my gaze to the inside corner of his eye and away from the hypnotizing irises.
Only when I was able to focus on his chin and think straight did I speak.
“Drake,” I spoke softly, like how I used to speak to afraid humans. Like how I spoke to him when we first met, though as I was speaking I vaguely noticed my voice was more tender than it was then. Less enticing, more heartfelt. Probably because I knew what I had to do, and I desperately didn’t want to do it.
“Drake, you need to listen to me okay? I think you’re a monster too, like me” I felt his grip loosen slightly, but not enough. Forcing me to switch tactics mentally preparing myself and putting up as good of a mental barrier I could manage I looked into Drakes eyes. Completely forgetting my plan when I did so.
Knowing what to do but unsure of how to get there I mentally scrambled for any kind of ideas. I felt his hand twitch slightly and when I refocused on his face I saw that he was looking at my lips hungrily. I immediately stopped biting my lip out of embarrassment, then I got an idea and it was the only thing close to a plan that I could manage, so I went with it. Hoping that the only thing that might loosen his grip would be his hormones. I figured it was worth a shot.
Tilting my head so that I was looking through my eyelashes I started biting my lip again and I saw his jaw clench. Smiling I was just about to try out the breathy voice girls do in the movies when I noticed a large shadow moving in our direction out of the corner of my eye. Then in a dark flash, Drake disappeared.
I laid there shocked and confused for about a millisecond, of at least until I heard the giant crash, that was when everything lurched back into focus. I rolled off the couch into a crouching position and looked in the obvious direction the crash had come from.
I couldn’t believe my eyes.
