There standing before me was Jacob and Drake circling each other at a standoff. Drake had his teeth bared and I could see that they were sharper than they should be, he had grown a lot too, instead of his usual height of about 6ft he was now closer to 7, though i couldn’t accurately tell from this distance.  

I tried to jump from the couch but my body wouldn’t move, I had no idea what was happening. I willed my body to move but it wouldn’t. I hadn’t experienced panic in so long that I didn’t know what was happening as I panicked on the couch for the two males safety. My brain went into overdrive, I planned out a course of attack and at the same time for the first time, I reached out to my instincts that were neglecting to be present in the current situation.

I had never knowingly reached out to them before but for some reason my thoughts knew exactly where to locate the part of my brain they call home. They sprang forward as soon as I mentally called upon them. Then suddenly my body was in action. I ran in Drakes direction, thankfully Jake knew that it was me running and stopped walking and shot me a quick image of one strategy we had created when street fighting. I sprinted straight towards Jake, partially shifting as I did so, and then dropped (quite painfully) onto my hip and slid along the tile floor taking Drakes legs out from under him with my own legs, causing him to fall onto my arm. With a solid hold on Drakes underarms I then crouched into a spring as my legs hit the wall and I launched myself away from the wall. I flapped my wings, making sure to keep a strong hold on Drake and was able to get us both up into the air

It was times like this that I really wished Jake had hands or opposable thumbs. As we circled once at the high ceiling I realised that there was no easy way out. There was a large, custom made, sliding back door that would’ve been our best bet, but it wasn’t open and we had no way of opening it. So I made a quick decision remembering one of the rice paper windows from when Artemis went through his fascination with Asian culture. I went for that and broke through it easily.

For once I was thankful for Artemis’ obsession with cultures and human interactions. Highlighting his constant desire to change the surroundings of his home. Who would’ve thought that something so odd would ever help me.

I struggled to keep us up in the air, Drake was still shifting slightly. I could feel the bones in his body shifting under my hands. If I wasn’t being pumped up with adrenalin I would’ve taken time to notice how against most odds, Drake was getting lighter. It was because as his bones were shifting, they were becoming more avian, so, like birds they were becoming sturdy yet lightweight. I had been fascinated by it ever since I first noticed it.

But there was no time to think about that, I had to figure out what the heck I was going to do with Drake. Even though he was getting lighter, that also meant that he was changing into an animal that, if provoked, could definitely do damage. Especially since in lees protected because I was only half shifted, I couldn’t risk shifting full on, because (though it is unlikely) it is possible that I could drop him while doing so. And I definitely didn’t want to do that.

I spotted a good place to land that would cause the last amount of damage to us both I eagerly declined picking up speed, courtesy of gravity, and when at a non-lethal height I let go of Drake and watched him twist and fall to the ground with inhuman grace. Like a cat, I thought then managed a decent landing.

Jake began to try and connect with me but I decided that since I wasn’t on my best game at the moment to only let him know I was okay. But to my surprise it was Artemis.

‘Sakina! What was that? You need to listen, there’s a reason why Toby can read your mind and why your not as agile as well.  And I think it’s also why Tyson was in your dreams. You both need to get back here right now.’

‘Okay I just need to deal with Drake then I’ll be right there. He just shifted’ I shot back.

The shock that was in Artemis was so intense I could feel it through the link, to the point where I felt shocked myself.

‘You both need to get back now, a.s.a.p.’ normally I would retort with something as awesome as ‘screw you’ but the fear in his voice caused me to bite my mental tongue.

‘Got it, fill me in while we get back’ said, just turning around. The whole mental conversation took as long as It took me to land and stand up since when conversing with someone mentally, when they speak it’s like you just had a thought, but your able to tell that the thought wasn’t yours just like your able to tell voices apart, even if there isn’t a distinguishable difference between the ’sound’ of your thoughts and the others.

‘Basically, you’re rubbing off on him. I was right about you having a mate, but it’s not like the other shifters where the mate is made for you, its more like a human relationship, you needed to choose someone that you would mate but you wouldn’t know it right away. You chose Toby, Sakina. And since you’ve chosen him, your unnatural shifter powers causing you to loose yours….’

He was still explaining, and I could hear it, but as soon as I was facing Drakes direction, I was no longer able to soak in his words.

My eyes widened and my jaw dropped internally. But I was still pumped on adrenalin, plus my instincts were still in charge. Therefore externally my knees bent my arms came up with my hands balled into fists and I spread my wings, forcing myself to shift a little more so that I was a few inches taller than the figure who stood before me.

“ah, Sakina, it’s been so long. It’s good to see you love” the statement was simple enough, but coming from his mouth I had to pretend to choke back a gag when really fear was pricking its way down my slightly scaly and deformed back.

I swallowed hard and tried to sound as confident and calm as I could as I said the name that had haunted me for so many years. The only thing that could still scare me

“Tyson” then I began to shake along with my voice
