Chapter 28

Kayli's POV

"You may not stay here like you did last time." Our old nurse tells me. I close my eyes, about to argue, but I just let her be. "Whatever," I look away.

I wait for Emila to come out of her room. Didn't take long.

"So now where should we go?" Karsley complains.

"The grocery store?" Darcine asks. I whisper, loud enough for them to hear, "they'd find us."

"How about the library?" Rancine suggests. Emila looks at her, dazed. "The LIBRARY? Who goes there anymore?"

"A lot of people, actually. But we'd never be caught because these people are focused on WINNING instead of READING."

The walk was long, and we'd kept along the shore so no one would see us, yet I didn't know how at this time of night.

I'm the last one in, then we find places to hide. "Strongest in the front. Me and Kayli will empty out and stay in the book drop-off, while Emila, you stay in the back, and Darcine and Karsley will protect you." Rancine orders.

"I can protect myself!" Emila declares. Rancine looks at her sternly. "No. Not yet. But anyway, me or Kayli will be on patrol at ALL times. We'll trade places." She glances at me. "If there's a problem, one of us will make a VERY loud alarm call, and if one of us doesn't hear it, WAKE. THEM. UP." She indicates the call. "Got it?"

"Yeah." We say together.

Nothing happened for the rest of the day, so we peacefully make our beds, and finally sleep after the long walk.
