CHAPTER 20: PLAN B
The Gilbert House
Natalie was as okay as she could be. Of course, she was terrified, but it was progress. She was able to have real conversations with Elena without flinching whenever she spoke. She'd spent most of her time with Stefan and Caroline, Stefan trying to make sure she was okay all the time, and Caroline's guilt eating her up, and Natalie being Natalie wasn't about to let her keep it up when she had enough problems with her mother, who just found out what her daughter was and as soon as the vervain was out of system then Caroline would compel her to forget. And whilst Caroline had her own drama that she needed to deal with instantly, Stefan did not, which gave him time to check up on Natalie.
"I said I'm fine Stefan." Natalie smiled at him.
"Well, you can never be too sure." Stefan retorted.
"Well," Natalie mocked him, making him chuckle at her. "I think you're sure when you asked me yesterday morning, and yesterday afternoon, and last night, and this morning and now."
"I'm just worried about you." Stefan frowned.
"I know, but I can take care of myself, you know that." Natalie stated, giving him a look.
"Really?" Stefan raised an eyebrow at her.
"I'm pretty good with a bow and arrow." Natalie shrugged smugly.
Stefan raised another eyebrow at her. "Why didn't you use that to protect yourself from Katherine?"
"In case you didn't notice, she looks exactly like my twin sister, and it's not like I go carrying around a bow all the time." Natalie retorted.
Stefan just smiled at her softly.
"This is really awkward for you, right?" Natalie grimaced. "I mean, Katherine being your first love, and all. First love is hard to get over."
"You speak from experience or...?" Stefan frowned.
"Yeah, I've been through the torture that is first love, yes." Natalie nodded.
And those words confused Stefan. Not in the normal way, he knew exactly what she meant by those words. But it was a strange feeling he got when he thought about her being with someone else. A feeling that confused him. Like a mixture of angry, sad, disappointed and annoyed. He might have been a little jealous.
"Tell me." Stefan suggested.
Natalie's eyes widened at these words. "Tell you? About my first love?"
"Yeah, just let it all out. I doubt there's anyone you've talked about this with." Stefan smiled slightly at the awkward girl.
"Well, uhm, his name... it was- I mean, it still is, he's not dead... his name's Scott," Natalie said awkwardly, Stefan chuckling under his breath at her. "We met on the first day of school and he was a total weirdo and offered me a pen, which I have no idea how he knew that I needed it. And then he invited me to a party and it all just... happened. He was a lacrosse player, and I would always cheer him on. And with the whole vampire hunter thing I needed some normal. He was that normal. But now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure he was a werewolf."
"He seemed like a great guy." Stefan smiled, ignoring the pit in his stomach as he thought about the two.
"He is. We don't really talk anymore, I mean, he's got this new girlfriend, last I heard." Natalie shrugged sadly.
"Well, since you told me about yours, I guess it's only fair that I tell you about mine." Stefan said.
"Yeah, I know the story of Katherine." Natalie rolled her eyes annoyedly.
