CHAPTER 4: UNPLEASANTVILLE

Mystic Falls High School

Natalie POV

Sp apparently this school had something called decade dances, which means you have to dress up as if from one particular decade.

And we got the 50's. Which meant poodle skirts and headbands.

Neither which made me want to think 'Natalie is definitely going to wear that'.

But I still had to go so I put on my 50's outfit which was a white headband, a blue shirt and a white skirt.

And since I barely knew anyone I was standing in the corner listening to the music. I'm such a loser.

"Hi, Natalie." Jenna said coming towards me on 50's clothes. Why don't I look like that in 50's clothes?

"Hey, Jenna. What are you doing here?" I asked.

"Chaperoning. That's what happens when you're the legal guardian of two teenagers at one school." she said.

"Two?" I asked.

Jenna nodded. "Jeremy and his older sister Elena." she said.

"The one Stefan was looking for?" I guessed, hotty that was taken was back in my mind.

Jenna nodded. "Probably, since Stefan is Elena's boyfriend."

"Makes sense." I said.

"How are you liking Mystic Falls?" she asked.

"It's... good, I guess." I shrugged.

"You guess?" Jenna asked, furrowing her eyebrows.

"It's just... this is the area my mom grew up in." I said, looking down, not knowing if she knew about it.

"Oh my god, I'm sorry, I didn't think." Jenna apologized.

"Dad told you about Mom?" I asked. "Yeah, I'm sorry." she said.

"It's okay, it's been like two or three years. Wow, I'm starting to lose count." I said as I closed my eyes and leaned up against the wall. "Did you know my grandparents got a grave for her?"

Jenna shook her head silently.

"I'm sorry, I shouldn't burden you with this. Especially if you have a thing for my dad." I said. I'm such a jerk.

Jenna smiled slightly. "It's okay. Elena and Jeremy's parents died, so I had to help them through it. If you need to talk to anyone, you can talk to me."

I smiled a small smiled and surprised her by hugging her. "Thank you." I said quietly.

"Anytime." Jenna whispered.

I pulled away. "My dad's over there by the way." I said as I pointed to where my dad stood.

"Be good to him, please. He's my dad and I love him. He's all I have left." I said.

Jenna nodded as she hugged me again before walking to my dad.

A Hallway

I was walking looking for my dad with my vervain bracelet on. Not that I didn't wear it before but it wasn't really important until now and I'm gonna shut up.

And he was there. The vampire that killed my mom. Great.

Then the vampire who killed my mom saw me. He looked me in the eyes trying to compel me.

"Are you the history teacher's daughter?" he asked, his pupils dialating.

"Yes." I said trying to keep my voice as monotone as possible.

"Why are you and your father in Mystic Falls." the vampire asked.

"He got a job as a teacher." I said.

"Where is your mother?" he asked.

"Dead." I said.

"Is everything you just said the truth?" he asked.

"Yes." I said.

"Then forget this conversation." the vampire said before walking away.

I looked down on my bracelet and kept it tight in my hands as I looked for my dad.

"Dad?" I called out.

"Natalie!" Dad said as he walked to me. "What happened?"

"The vampire who killed Mom is here." I said.

"I know, I recognized him." Dad told me.

"Me too, last night at The Grill." I said, and he did not look happy that I didn't tell him. Oops?

"And you didn't tell me?" Dad asked, anger evident in his tone of voice.

"I thought that was obvious." I said as if it was obvious but still in a feigned confused tone of voice.

He closed his eyes in annoyance. "What happened?"

"He tried to compel me, but luckily I have my vervain bracelet." I said.

"He tried to compel me too." Dad said and he held up his hand revealing vervain on his palm.

But then I remembered Jenna who was totally into him and she might think that he was blowing her off.

"Go back to your date, I'll take a cab home." I offered.

"Really?" he asked.

"Go for it. It's been two years, Dad. It's time to move on." I said before I walked away with a sad smile.
