Chapter 9

WHERE ALEX FEELS LIKE HE'S 14 AGAIN...... OH WAIT, EVEN AT THAT AGE HE WAS ALLOWED ON MISSIONS

Once they came back Riley announced the news: Dimitri Sarov is going to use Al-Qahira's bomb to hit Flamanville's nuclear power plant.

"I found little chatter on the attack but I selected some info regarding military bases as you suggested Alex but I almost came out empty handed. I think Sarov wanted everyone to focus on a military facility so he can make his real move. I came across a noun 'Horseman03' he is a well known hacker, hacked the NSA, CIA and the NATO servers, he received a huge paiement last month and I was able to trace back some of his activities on the web and they all seemed to trace back to this power plant."

She displayed on her rig a schematic of the French Flamanville Power Plant that Mac was already studying.

"Don't tell me they are doing a Tchernobyl again, I don't want superpowers man," Jack nearly joked.

"Actually they can't, the nuclear core is protected by a container as strong as a military bunker itself protected by one it's impossible to pierce through, except maybe with a nuclear bomb" Mac corrected, "but it's more like Fukushima. They want a cooling crisis."

"Okay.... but they are still dangerous, right?" Bozer asked.

"Yes, if they block the cooling process hydrogen is bound to explode, creating small scale explosions and a small leakage of radiation. The local population will be evacuated, everybody would give in to panic and the government will search for a culprit and everyone would be targeted."

"But if they hired a hacker to stop the system, why did Sarov buy a bomb for?" Alex asked.

"The hacker will stop the cooling system by shutting off electricity but the backups will start to keep it going but it's a failsafe, no one can access the servers until the threat disappears so they need to physically destroy the generators."

Jack dialed Matty's number and informed her of the target and went to talk to her in private in the bathroom.

"Listen Matty, the kid assures everyone that he's fine but he's not, he got in the car that could get fried after hitting the chopper we thought the bomb was in. He thought the car was going kaboom but he didn't care."

On the other end, Matty was silenced. She knew Alex's past would come to hunt him with this mission but she wanted to give a chance at facing his demons but if it was too much then she had to do something.

"What do you suggest, Dalton?"

"You get us to Flamanville with the exfil team chopper and you find him a flight home from the airport there."

"He's not gonna like it."

"Well, I won't let him die to stop a nuclear disaster while he's still spiraling down from the previous one."

The flight to Flamanville was quiet. Bozer and Mac are playing cards at the back and Riley's not far behind on her computer trying to see if she can access the power plant's servers but it's impossible, she got access to the cameras but Horseman03 has been working on it for a month and it is impossible to break. All she can do is send the tech team an email to ask them to reboot the servers but this measure takes twenty-hours to be voted and they only have two days before the attack and she's not even sure a reboot will work and only make the grid more vulnerable.

Jack is not far from Alex, shooting uncertain glances in his direction not knowing how to break the news to Alex. He could wait until they arrive at the airport , it will leave less time for Alex to react and find a way out. They were almost there, thirty minutes left before a grumpy karate kid was forced into a flight home with urges to murder Jack.

When they arrived at the airport, a SUV was waiting for them, sent by the French military division watching Flamanville Power Plant. Mac, Riley and Bozer got in and Alex was about to do the same when Jack stopped him.

"You're not coming."

"WHAT?!" Alex almost shouted which resulted in the rest of his team getting out of the car.

"I said, you will sit this one out. And that is an order," Jack held his hand seeing a protest was coming.

"So what, hum? I tell you stuff and you decide i'm not field ready, is that it?! That's total crap! I'm not a kid anymore!"

"I know you ain't and I meant what I said earlier but now it's time for you to realise you will be better at home than on this mission."

It was like watching a tennis game but Jack was the accomplished tennis player.

"I can follow you if I want to."

"That would be insubordination."

"Never stopped me before."

"Handcuffed to your seat will," and Jack added to one of the exfil team members, "make sure he boards the plane." He got in the driver seat and motioned the rest of his team to go back in as he watched Alex being led into the terminal.
